Crawfish, crayfish, yabbies, and crawdads are all the same freshwater crustaceans — the name depends on what region of the United States they are found in!

Crawfish look like very small lobsters and are usually steamed or boiled. They are commonly served with cornbread, coleslaw, or hush puppies, but the essential thing to serve with the crawfish is the dipping sauce!

If you do not know which sauce to serve, then you are just at the right place. You will love this one and the best thing is that you can also serve it with shrimp and prawns.

What Does Crawfish Taste Like?

If you have never tried crawfish before and you are wondering how they taste like, to me, they taste like a combination of crab, lobster, and shrimp, just with less salinity and more sweetness.

Traditionally prepared crawfish often includes Cajun seasoning, which infuses the meat with notes of cayenne, paprika, garlic, oregano, and other ingredients.

Because these pair so well, this crawfish sauce has those same ingredients that will enrich and complement the freshly prepared crawfish.

What Is Crawfish Dipping Sauce?

Crawfish dipping sauce is a condiment you serve with crawfish. It is made with mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, Cajun hot sauce, Cajun seasoning, prepared horseradish, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, lemon juice, and just a bit of sugar.

When combined, these give a creamy, spicy, and flavorful condiment you will love, and it will pair amazingly with the crawfish.

How To Make Crawfish Sauce

Just as with most dipping sauces, all you have to do is gather your ingredients and combine them all in a bowl. It is that easy — within 5 minutes your sauce will be ready!

However, with these sauces, I always advise my friends to refrigerate them for 30 minutes. This will allow the flavors to develop and blend better. So, always chill your sauce before serving it!

How To Store Crawfish Sauce

The simplest way to store sauce is to transfer it into an airtight container and refrigerate it for up to two days.

I would not recommend freezing the sauce as it has mayonnaise in it. Both mayonnaise and mayo-based sauces can be frozen safely for 3 months, but once thawed, all the ingredients will separate.

To bring them back together, just add vinegar or lemon juice and blend until emulsified. However, with these new ingredients, you will change the flavor of your crawfish sauce.
