What Are Cookie Rolling Pins?
Okay, so you won’t really find a rolling pin that is specifically branded as a “cookie rolling pin”. Cookie rolling pins more refer to a variety of rolling pins that are exceptionally well adept to make cookies with.
“But, how can there be such a thing as a bad rolling pin? Aren’t they all the same? Won’t any rolling pin work just fine?”
In short, absolutely not!
Think back to a time when you spent hours making the perfect cookie dough. You worked with it very gently, gave it plenty of resting time, shaped it with the most possible care, only to get stuck at the rolling part!
Some rolling pins tend to stick to cookie dough more than others. This can not only cause the cookie dough to constantly tear, but it could also create flakes in the dough itself.
These flakes will create an irregular surface once the cookies have been baked, which will ultimately make them less pretty and more difficult to decorate.
Furthermore, some rolling pins aren’t actually completely smooth. This can cause some of your cookies to have unappealing indentations in them and ruin the entire look that you are going for.
These are only some of the reasons that it is especially important to have a good quality cookie rolling pin!
Types Of Cookie Rolling Pins
Okay, so there are quite a few options to choose from when it comes to cookie rolling pins. Arguably the most important aspect to first consider is the material.
Some of the most popular rolling pin materials include wood, marble, ceramic, plastic, or even metal. Each of these naturally has its pros and cons.
Then, you also get the size of the rolling pins. These vary in thickness and in length. While the actual thickness of the rolling pin itself doesn’t matter too much (it is more of a convenience thing), the length has a very specific function.
Longer cookie rolling pins naturally roll more dough. Or at least can roll a larger sheet of dough in an even thickness at once! This reduces the number of times you have to go over the dough.
And finally, a very convenient feature that not all rolling pins have but arguably should, is rubber rings.
In short, but we will discuss these in detail later, these rings vary in thickness and are placed on the edges of the rolling pin.

Cookie Rolling Pin Materials
So, as we have already mentioned, there are a few materials you can choose from. A lot of people prefer wooden rolling pins, but personally, we aren’t the biggest fans.
Wooden rolling pins are generally lightweight and have a smooth finish. You will also see that they come in a wide range of lengths, thicknesses, and even designs (like including handles to increase the ease of use).
However, wooden rolling pins do weather over time and definitely become less non-stick as they age. They also can easily dent and won’t create a smooth finish on the surfaces of your cookies.
We would also not recommend washing your wooden rolling pin in water as it can expand and shrink, causing it to deform.
While this doesn’t apply to all rolling pins, it is nearly impossible to immediately tell which ones will be better than others.
Moving on to plastic rolling pins; these are possibly our favorite!
These rolling pins are made from food-safe hard plastic and can either be a tube or a solid rolling pin. They also come in a wide variety of designs and even vary in weight.
Marble rolling pins work well for cookie doughs that have to be rolled when it is cold. The weight of the marble rolling pins helps ease the amount of pressure you have to apply to get the dough flat.
However, they become very heavy and difficult to control when rolling thin sheets.
Ceramic rolling pins are equally impressive compared to the plastic ones we love; however, they are fragile in nature and also naturally more expensive.
Cookie Rolling Pin Thickness and Length
The thickness of a rolling pin usually has an effect on its weight. Obviously the thicker it is the heavier the rolling pin will be. The weight of the rolling pin does actually matter.
Heavier rolling pins work better when you are trying to roll out thick and chilled cookie dough. They make the work much easier.
However, the downside is that once the dough is flat and you need to use more precision to get a thin dough, they immediately become a hassle.
So, you definitely need something in between. Wooden rolling pins are usually best for this as well as solid plastic pins and even ceramic ones (as long as they are thick).
The length of the rolling pins also matters because it will determine how much you can roll out at a time. This is something that comes down to personal preference and how you are planning on using it.
Now, let’s break it down; what to look for when choosing a fantastic cookie rolling pin! This guide will help you narrow down your choices a lot.
Arguably, the material that the rolling pin is made from is one of the most important factors to consider. We have already discussed the common materials in-depth above including all of their pros and cons.
Our first choice in material would have to be a hard and solid food-grade plastic rolling pin. They are lightweight but still have enough weight to aid in rolling thicker dough.
They also come in a very large range of sizes, thicknesses, and designs. They are completely smooth, won’t easily dent, and is generally dishwasher safe.
Our second material option is wood, however, only if it is a very compressed wood that doesn’t have any seams or pores.
From a budget point of view, wooden and plastic cookie rolling pins are much more cost-effective.
Marble rolling pins are the most expensive and don’t have such an all-round use compared to the other materials. Ceramic rolling pins are more expensive, but will also work well.
The length of the rolling pin you use will come down to how often you bake and how much cookie dough you need to roll out.
A shorter rolling pin saves a lot of space and works great for smaller batches of dough. They are easy to control and generally lightweight.
Longer rolling pins on the other hand work great if you often make cookies or at least make large batches at a time.
They also have some weight to them that helps you work the large batches better. But, they are more expensive and do take up more space.
The length and material you choose will directly affect the weight of the rolling pin. A proper rolling pin, in our opinion, should have some weight to it but not too much.
You need to be able to easily roll thick pieces of dough while still being able to control the roller.
Wood and plastic again are the best choices for this.
Handles are very controversial when it comes to rolling pins. While they do sometimes make it much easier to roll, they have some downsides to them.
Some handles actually create instability when they inevitably come loose. This makes it much more difficult to roll the dough with precision, and you end up just using the rolling pin as is.
Another big downfall is that some rolling pins with handles have been horribly designed and allow water to get inside the rolling pin.
This can cause rust (as the handlebars are usually made from metal) and can ultimately affect your cookie dough.
Okay, so we absolutely love rubber rings, but as with everything in life, they have their pros and their cons.
The biggest pro is that you can roll out the dough extremely evenly and at precise thicknesses. This is something that is great for novice bakers and anyone wanting to make their life easier.
The biggest downfall is bad designs. Some of these rubbing rings don’t stay on when you are rolling or moving around a lot. Some also misform when used often or aren’t actually even in thickness.

1. Joseph Joseph Adjustable Wooden Rolling Pins
This is definitely one of the best rolling pins for cookies out there.
Now, we know we personally don’t love all wooden rolling pins, but this one is definitely an exception.
It is made from a very smooth and compressed wood that has been sealed to remove virtually all pores. While it can still dent, it at least isn’t as soft a wood as many other brands’ are.
The rolling pin measures at 17.13 inches (43.5 cm) making it perfect for larger batches of dough.
It is 2.72 inches (7 cm) thick and has enough weight to it to help you work the hard dough while still being manageable to work with itself.
And, arguably its best feature, is its adjustable rings. What makes this design so effective is that the rings are screwed onto the sides of the rolling pin, not placed over the pin itself.
This means that the rings are more sturdy and won’t move around when being used.

If you aren’t familiar with fondant rolling pins, these are the hard solid plastic rolling pins that we were talking about.
These rolling pins are called fondant pins because that is where they are more often used.
The reason they are so popular is that they are completely smooth and texture-free, perfect for creating smooth fondant surfaces and of course, cookies as well.
This rolling pin is only 9 inches (22 cm) long, which is perfect for your everyday baker. And, it is lightweight and won’t take up a ton of drawer or kitchen space!

Now, before you ask, these indentations are so shallow that they will not affect your cookie dough in any way and will still give you a smooth surface.
And, the measurements will never fade or go away if you properly look after the rolling pin.
Another fantastic feature of this product is how adjustable it is. It has 5 different-sized rolling pin rings that screw onto the sides of the wooden pin.
However, what makes this product even better is that you can screw on handles if you’d like.
