Puff Dogs Recipe

Everyone loves hot dogs enveloped in bread dough. This fast-food delicacy is an all-time favorite grab-and-go snack.

In fact, my first fast food love was the hot dog! Delicious sausage between warm bread, with mustard and pickles. What’s not to love?

It is still my favorite quick meal, and regardless of all recipes I share or make, this one has a special place in my heart.

The hot dog is a pretty humble dish, but when the sausages are wrapped in a flaky puff pastry, the mea reaches new heights of deliciousness.

Bread Dough Vs Puff Pastry

There is nothing wrong with bread dough. It is the traditional way to serve hot dogs, but now and then we all want to try something new or create a brag-worthy recipe. This is where puff pastry comes to the scene.

While classic hot dog buns do not have many variations, the puff pastry can be shaped in different ways to create a variety of different styles.

For this recipe, I just wrapped hot dogs in a puff pastry for a plain look, but you can wrap your hot dog in spirals or braid it, and whatever you do, it will look amazing.

In terms of preparation, puff pastry is easy to work with and can be bought at your local grocer.

Of course, you can buy hot dog buns, but sometimes they are stale or just come with loads of palm oil (the production of which is detrimental to the environment).

Puff pastry, on the other hand, is made with real butter or margarine, which is way better and tastier than palm oil.

What Sausage To Choose

For this recipe, you can use hot dog sausages, vegan sausages, frankfurter sausages…whatever you like! I always go with the classic hot dog sausages, as they are the easiest to find and somehow work great with any condiment.

When it comes to the size, you can go with large or mini sausages. For this recipe, I chose mini sausages since they not only look really cute, but are also perfect for appetizers, after school snacks, cocktail parties, or Super Bowl parties.

Mini sausages are perfect when you want something tasty now but need room for something more substantial later. If you do not have mini sausages but still want to make this recipe, just cut your classic sausages into pieces.

The Best Way To Thaw Puff Pastry

Although it may sound ridiculous, a friend of mine told me once she defrosts the puff pastry in a microwave.

I do not have anything against microwaves, but some things should not be rushed. The secret to making puff pastry look and taste as good as it does from a bakery is properly thawing it.

There are two ways; the first one is thawing the puff pastry in a fridge overnight. You can thaw it in a package, or if you want it ready during the day, arrange the puff pastry on a baking sheet and thaw like that.

The second method is room temperature; unbox the dough and keep an eye on it. Make sure you check the dough every 20 minutes. You don’t want to get your dough too soft, just pliable enough that you can roll it.

I must admit I even tried the microwave method just from the curiosity and found that the butter melted and drained out and the puff pastry was still partially frozen.

So, thaw your puff pastry gently, without any force.

Which Condiments To Use

Here are some of the most popular condiments for your hot dogs. Maybe you tried all, or maybe you skipped some and this is a perfect opportunity to try them out:

  • Mustard – This is the king of toppings as its zesty, sour flavor pairs with the salty hot dog.
  • Ketchup – Just beside the king of toppings is his crimson queen, ketchup. Ketchup adds sweetness and with mustard creates one colorful combo.
  • Onions – Fresh or grilled, nothing beat onions. The onions give some extra flavor and crunch.
  • Sauerkraut – Fermented chopped cabbage goes very well with these dogs. If you are going with sauerkraut, skip any other topping because the sauerkraut will overpower them all.
  • Relish – Relish gives a sweet and sour kick to your hot dog. It comes in a variety of flavors from sweet to spicy.
  • Coleslaw – This is less aggressive than sauerkraut. It gives just the right amount of sweet and sour, with a nice crunch.
  • Mayonnaise – This is not such a great topping on its own, but it is great when paired with other condiments like mustard.
  • Jalapeno – This topping puts the “hot” in hot dogs. If you love a hot dog with a spicy kick then go with jalapenos.
  • Cheese – Cheddar or cream cheese, or whatever cheese you want, can change the flavor of your hot dog and give it a gooey or creamy texture. It goes best with chili and grilled onions.
