If you are wanting to step up your cookie decorating game, the next natural step would be to start decorating using projected images. It makes it easy to accurately copy complex patterns and images with minimal effort, ultimately saving you time and money!

But which projectors work the best for cookie decorating? To start, we’d first recommend any type of micro, handheld, or mini projector that is easy to mount.

Then you should look at how they connect to power and devices, what their resolutions are, how well they function, and if they have any additional features or add-ons that make them worth their price.

Today, we will not only look at an in-depth buyer’s guide for these projectors for cookie decorating but discuss the best brands and models that are available online today. We’ve included a ton of variety so you can buy something that works best for your decorating station, budget, and home.

What Are Projectors?

Bear with us. To understand how this decorating technique works, it’s crucial to understand what a projector is and the different types available today.

A projector, also known as an image projector, is an optical electronic device that projects an image onto a surface using light. We won’t go too much into the technology behind this device, but it’s fascinating!

These devices have been around since prehistory! The first known recording of the science dates back to 840 AD in Indonesia. Ever since it has evolved and taken on many shapes and forms until you get the digital projectors most commonly found today.

The type of projector you would need today will need to project clear images. Because you are decorating, there is no need to get a movie projector.

Some examples of projectors that can work for cookie decorating (projecting images) are overhead projectors, video projectors (NOT movie projectors), and handheld projectors.

How Are They Used for Cookie Decorating?

The technique is simple. It will change slightly depending on the type of projector you use. So, how does the technique work?

1. Set Up the Projector

First, you have to set up your projector. Now, this part is pretty tricky because the projected image has to point downwards onto the table you are working on.

Now, if you have a handheld or mini projector, you can mount it onto a tripod or some kind of stand relatively easily. A little bit of duct tape comes in handy here!

But, if you have a video projector or overhead projector, your job is going to be a little more difficult. So, while they can work, they are very difficult to set up. And honestly, one of the main reasons we ended up ditching the old-school and investing in a small handheld projector instead.

2. Project Your Image

You need to make sure your images are prepared. If you are using an overhead projector, you will need to print your image on a transparent film.

If you are using a video projector, it will most likely need to be connected to a device via Bluetooth or HDMI cable.

A mini or handheld projector usually works with Bluetooth. If you are using any type of digital projector, you just need a digital copy of the image or pattern.

All of the projected images need to point downwards.

3. Position Your Projector and Cookies

Next, you can align the projector and cookie until you are happy with the image being transferred. Make sure it is PERFECT before starting the decorating process.

Also, make sure you have set up the projector in a safe area where it won’t move or fall off. This makes it very difficult to set up in the same position again.

4. Decorate Your Cookies

Finally, when your setup is complete, you can begin decorating your cookies immediately. Make sure the cookie stays secure so you don’t have to realign the pattern the whole time.

Once finished, repeat the process with the next cookie.

Are There Others Ways to Decorate Cookies?

Now, there are MANY different ways you can transfer images or patterns onto cookies. And honestly, the projector technique is relatively new.

Before this amazing discovery, most people simply traced the image directly onto the cookie using a food-safe pen. Once the pattern or image is outlined, you can proceed with the royal icing.

Many people also used a stencil to create images on cookies. And some even simply printed digital images onto an edible fondant sheet.

However, while all these techniques were cheaper, the projector method is significantly easier. Plus, it’s a one-time purchase that also has other uses.

Benefits of Using a Projector

It’s the easiest and most accurate way to transfer an image to the surface. Not to mention, it allows for a lot more accuracy, especially with complex images and patterns.

You only need a projector and a stand. For most other techniques, you need to wait for the edible print or take extra time tracing the image by hand. Once the projector is set up, you can immediately start piping – there is minimal ahead-of-time planning needed.

Another benefit of the projector method is that it can work out significantly cheaper over the long haul. If you always print images, it will eventually add up. A mini projector is a one-time purchase that can be reused in many ways.

And finally, it’s fun! Come on! Nobody can deny it. It does make you feel like a professional baker and decorator. And as you may know, the more confident and prepared you feel for a project, the better you do!

How to Choose the Best Projector for Cookie Decorating

Now, while there are quite a few projector options out there (and we are just talking about type), we will only be looking at the BEST one to use. That is, if you couldn’t have guessed by now, a mini or handheld projector.

cookie decorating

You can also use a video projector, but as we’ve mentioned, the setup is really difficult. And, unless you plan on making a home cinema, it’s a hefty investment for just cookie decorating.

So, let’s look at some of the criteria to look out for when buying a mini or handheld projector.

Digital Mini or Hand-Held Projector

So, first of all, only buy mini or handheld projectors for cookie decorating purposes. They can also be used to project images and movies in your home, but their quality won’t be as great as compared to a video projector.

These types of projectors have become increasingly popular these days and are super easy to find in-store and online.

If you are looking at an option that isn’t on our list, use the criteria below to ensure you invest in a proper option.

You have to think about how the projector connects to a power source AND the image.

We find cordless projectors the easiest to use for cookie decorating. It makes the setup less messy and cluttered. You can use a battery-operated projector or a rechargeable one (our preferred option).

Then, when it comes to projecting the image, there are many different options models have. Some work with a USB stick, some use Wifi or Bluetooth, and others need an HDMI cable.

Again, depending on your setup at home, the cables may become messy and difficult to work around, especially because the projector should hand right above the image.

Brightness or Resolution

There is nothing worse than a blurry image, which makes it more difficult to trace. So, always make sure your model works with a brightness of at least 30 lumens. Slightly lower may still be fine but becomes tricky.

In terms of resolution, anything better than 480p is workable. But again, for a clear, crisp, and sharp image, we would recommend a model with at least 720p resolution.

How to Set Up / Mount

projectors for cookie decorating

Next up, you also need to look at how the projector can be mounted. For most of the options (especially the handheld ones), you can buy a separate Cookie Decorator Mount. Ideally, you can buy one that has a flexible arm.

Some of these projectors also come with some sort of mount that you may be able to adhere to a regular camera tripod. But it depends.

Either way, plan ahead. You don’t want your projector showing up without a way to mount it.

These mini handheld projectors are a little bit pricey. That still doesn’t mean you have to break the piggy bank by buying one.

You can get many reasonably priced options that have amazing features. You may just have to spend a little bit of time looking. But then again, that’s why we’ve compiled this list today!

Other Benefits

There are some additional features these projector models could have that add a little bit more bang for your buck.

For example, our personal projector has a built-in speaker. This allows us to put on some music or a podcast while we are decorating.

Another great feature to look out for is a remote control. This could allow you to zoom in, adjust the brightness or resolution, adjust the volume, and switch the projector on and off without having to move it.
