Maple syrup is a popular sweetener used for waffles and pancakes, but did you know that you can use it in your coffee? This is a healthy, natural sweetener made from the sap of maple trees and has a distinctively sweet, rich flavor. 

How to use maple syrup in your coffee? First, make sure to buy 100% natural maple syrup, which has a thinner consistency and can dissolve well in hot water. You can use it to complement vanilla, brown sugar, and even spices like cinnamon and nutmeg in your coffee.

A little bit of sweetness in your coffee is always a plus, and most people gain that sweetness from sugar or an artificial sweetener. 

Unfortunately, sugar is not all that healthy for you. The body can take a long time to break down the sucrose molecules, and it takes a lot of work for your body to turn sugar into energy. As a result, sugar will stay in your system for longer. 

If you are on a diet, or if you have high blood sugar or diabetes, you won’t be able to consume sugar either. It doesn’t have many nutritional benefits, and it can cause an energy crash if you consume too much sugar too fast. 

This is where maple syrup is a superior sweetener, and not just for autumn-themed coffee! 

Maple syrup can add a sweet taste to your coffee, but without the sugar crash — especially if you get one that’s sugar-free.

Maple syrup is lower than sugar on the glycemic index, which means that it’s healthier for your body. Even diabetics can consume maple syrup in moderation!  

What Is The Best Maple Syrup To Use In Coffee?

If you want to use maple syrup in coffee, make sure to get 100% natural maple syrup. 

Pancake syrups and maple-flavored syrups are not 100% natural maple syrups — these types of syrups usually have a thicker viscosity that can be difficult to dissolve. 

Plus, they usually contain artificial sweeteners and corn syrup, which makes the viscosity thicker, but it won’t add anything (aside from sweetness) to the flavors of your coffee.

Real, 100% natural maple syrup usually has a thinner consistency that allows it to dissolve seamlessly in hot liquid — this means it will be perfect for mixing with a hot beverage like coffee without clumping up or crystallizing. 

Although natural maple syrup can be quite expensive, it doesn’t take much to flavor your coffee, which means a bottle can last you quite a while.

Compared to sugar, maple syrup adds not only a sweet taste, but also a rich aftertaste that can raise the flavors of your coffee to the next level. 

Natural maple syrup also comes in a few different grades, depending on the clarity, density, color, and flavor.

Grade A maple syrup has a lighter color and a milder taste, while Grade B syrup is a little bit darker in color and has a richer flavor. 

Grade B maple syrup is often used in baking, but you can also use it in your coffee for a strong, intense flavor. If you only want a mild, sweet taste, then Grade A maple syrup can make a great addition to your coffee. 

There are a few ways that you can add maple syrup to coffee. You can use it as a drizzle on top of drinks, similar to how you would use it over pancakes and waffles.

Recipes Using Maple Syrup In Coffee

1. Maple Syrup In Drip Coffee  

Drip coffee is just a fancy way to call the coffee that you usually make in a coffee maker. If you love a fresh cup of coffee in the morning, chances are you make drip coffee every day with your coffee maker. 

This recipe is the simplest way to enjoy your coffee while experimenting with maple syrup. 

Ingredients

  • A pot of coffee brewed in your coffee maker
  • 100% natural maple syrup, to taste
  • Milk, to taste

Instructions

  1. To make this recipe, simply brew a pot of coffee in your favorite coffee maker. 
  2. While waiting for your coffee maker to finish, add the maple syrup to the bottom of your cup.
    • The maple syrup will dissolve when it meets hot water, so there’s no need to prep the mug or warm it up. 
    • You can adjust the amount of maple syrup in your coffee, but a little bit will go a long way!
  3. Pour the coffee into the cup and mix well, then add milk to taste. 

2. Cinnamon Maple Coffee

Maple syrup goes especially well with spices like cinnamon and nutmeg — these are signature flavors of the fall season, so why not give this recipe a try? 

Ingredients

  • A pot of coffee brewed in your coffee maker
  • 100% natural maple syrup, to taste
  • Milk, to taste
  • A dash of ground cinnamon
  • A dash of ground nutmeg

Instructions

  1. Brew a pot of coffee. 
  2. While waiting for your coffee maker, pour the maple syrup and add a little bit of cinnamon and nutmeg into your coffee cup.
    • Note that nutmeg and cinnamon can be quite overpowering, so a tiny bit will really go a long way!
  3. If you want the spices to dissolve a little bit better, microwave them for about 10 seconds. 
  4. After the coffee is made, pour it into the cup and mix well with the maple syrup. Add milk to taste. 

3. Maple Latte

If you want to get fancy with foam milk, you can also make a maple latte. 

You can foam milk with a jar or even a French press. It will take a little bit more work compared to a latte coffee maker, but the result won’t disappoint! 

Ingredients

  • A shot of espresso (or strong black coffee if you don’t have an espresso maker)
  • Milk, to taste
  • Maple syrup, to taste 
  • A dash of ground cinnamon
  • A dash of ground nutmeg 

Instructions

  1. First, brew espresso or black coffee. 
  2. While waiting for your coffee, heat up your milk in the microwave for about 30 seconds. The milk should be hot, but not boiling. 
  3. Combine the milk with the espresso or black coffee according to the following:
    • With a French press: pour the hot milk into the French press, then press up and down repeatedly for about a minute until the milk starts to foam. 
    • With a jar: pour the hot milk into a jar, seal the lid, and shake the jar repeatedly for about a minute until the milk starts to foam. Keep in mind that the jar method can take a little bit longer than the French press method. 
  4. Pour the maple syrup and spices into your cup and heat them up in the microwave for about 10 seconds. Then, pour coffee over the maple syrup and mix well until the mixture is dissolved. 
  5. Top it off with the foamed milk and enjoy it while it’s hot!

4. Maple Pumpkin Spice Latte

Maple latte and pumpkin spice latte are both signature autumn drinks, so why not combine them into a super cup of warmth? 

Ingredients

For homemade pumpkin pie spice: 

  • 1 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 tbsp ground cinnamon 
  • 1 tsp ground ginger
  • ½ tsp allspice 

Note that this pumpkin pie spice recipe will give you way more than the ½ tsp required for this recipe, so you can store the rest in an airtight container and use it in future recipes! 

For maple pumpkin spice latte: 

  • A shot of espresso
  • 1 cup of milk 
  • 2 tbsp pumpkin puree
  • 2 tbsp pure maple syrup
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • ½ tsp homemade pumpkin pie spice (or store-bought)

Instructions

  1. Warm the milk in the microwave for about a minute. 
  2. As you wait for the milk to warm, add the pumpkin puree, natural maple syrup, vanilla extract, and pumpkin pie spice to a blender and mix well. 
  3. Add the milk and blend using the highest speed setting until the milk starts to froth. 
  4. Pour a shot of espresso into a mug, then top it off with the frothed milk mixture. 
  5. Add a dash of pumpkin pie spice on top and serve while hot. 

5. Cold Brew Maple Iced Coffee

As its name suggests, cold brew is coffee that’s made without heat. While you can use store-bought cold brew for this recipe, we do love making our own.

Although this method will take about 12 hours longer than making regular coffee, it will result in a coffee that’s sweeter and smoother as well. This is because the heat can bring out the acidity and bitter flavor of the coffee.

Cold brewing eliminates this issue, which means your coffee will be naturally sweeter and less acidic. This flavor can be perfectly complemented with maple syrup too!

Ingredients

  • Ground coffee (medium grind) 
  • A French press
  • Maple syrup, to taste
  • Milk, to taste
  • A dash of salt 

Instructions

  1. To make cold brew coffee: Add the ground coffee to the cold brew container or French press, then fill the pot with room-temperature water. Stir the pot to combine the coffee and the water. 
  2. Place the mixture in the fridge overnight or for up to 12 hours.
    • Don’t press the filter unless you are ready to drink your cold brew coffee. If you press the filter, the coffee will develop acidity, making your coffee bitter and sour. 
  3. To make the iced coffee: When you are ready to enjoy your cold brew, press the filter down to separate the ground coffee and the cold brew coffee. 
  4. Pour the maple syrup and the milk together and heat in the microwave for about 15 seconds, then mix well to dissolve the maple syrup. 
  5. Pour the cold brew coffee over the milk and maple syrup. If you want to balance out the sweet taste of the coffee and the maple syrup, add a dash of salt for a kick. 
  6. Add ice if needed, and enjoy! 

6. Dolce Iced Coffee

Dolce iced coffee is a signature Italian drink that’s made with brown sugar, maple, and cinnamon syrup. The result is a warming autumn-themed drink that will make your breakfast instantly cozier!

Ingredients

For the dolce syrup:

  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • ⅓ cup 100% natural maple syrup
  • ½ cup water
  • A cinnamon stick 

For the iced coffee: 

  • 1 cup of cold brew coffee (or 2 espresso shots)
  • Ice
  • Milk, to taste
  • A dash of ground cinnamon

Instructions

  1. To make the dolce syrup: Using a non-stick saucepan, heat all the ingredients together over medium heat. Stir them together so that all the ingredients are well combined, and the sugar is dissolved. 
  2. Remove the pan from the heat, then let the syrup return to room temperature. 
  3. Remove the cinnamon stick, then transfer the syrup to an airtight container. You can use the syrup for up to 1 week. 
  4. To make the iced coffee: Pour the cold brew coffee into a cup. If you are using espresso, fill the cup with ice and the espresso. 
  5. Add milk to taste, and drizzle with 2 tbsp of the dolce syrup. 
  6. Add a dash of cinnamon on top, and enjoy!

7. Maple Dalgona Coffee

Dalgona coffee is a whipped coffee that’s made with instant coffee instead of coffee beans. This recipe will give you a super creamy cup of coffee that resembles a dessert while still giving you a caffeine boost!

Ingredients

  • Hot water
  • Instant coffee
  • Sugar, to taste
  • Natural maple syrup, to taste
  • Milk, to taste

Instructions

  1. Mix the instant coffee and sugar together first.
  2. Add hot water to the dry mixture, then use a hand mixer to whip the coffee at high speed for a few minutes until the coffee forms a stiff peak. 
  3. Fill a cup with ice and milk. 
  4. Spoon the whipped coffee over the milk, making sure that the whipped coffee mixture still retains the stiff peaks as you do so.
  5. Drizzle maple syrup on top of the drink and enjoy!

8. Iced Maple Mocha 

Mocha is a coffee drink made with espresso and white or dark chocolate. Adding maple syrup to a mocha drink can really highlight the rich taste of chocolate and coffee while still adding a sweet note to the drink!

Ingredients

  • 7 oz milk
  • 1 shot of espresso
  • Maple syrup, to taste
  • 1 tsp drinking chocolate
  • Ice 

Instructions

  1. Pour a shot of espresso into your cup and add the drinking chocolate. Mix well, then add ice to the cup.
  2. Microwave the milk for about a minute. Then, froth the milk using one of the following methods: 
    • With a French press: pour the hot milk into the French press so that it fills about a third of the pot. Then, press the filter repeatedly for about a minute to froth the milk. 
    • With a jar: Fill the jar halfway through with the hot milk, and seal the jar tightly so that there’s no leakage. Then, shake the jar repeatedly until the milk starts foaming. 
  3. Fill your cup with the foamed milk. Drizzle the maple syrup over the foam, and top it off with a few dashes of cocoa powder. Enjoy! 

9. Maple Cinnamon Macchiato​

Maple cinnamon macchiato is a seasonal drink that you can order at Starbucks, and it’s a signature offer that comes every autumn.

Ingredients

  • 1 shot of espresso 
  • 1 tbsp of natural maple syrup 
  • ½ cup of milk
  • ½ tsp cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Fill your cup with a shot of espresso. 
  2. Heat the milk in the microwave for about a minute to warm it up, then add the maple syrup and mix well. 
  3. Froth the milk using the jar method or the French press method mentioned above. 
  4. Top the cup with the frothed milk. Sprinkle cinnamon on top and serve while hot!
