This is a super easy recipe that requires just a few ingredients and not a whole lot of skill. Lemon juice and zest give these chicken wings a bright lemon flavor, and the honey adds just a touch of pleasant sweetness.ย
This recipe is a super delicious choice for dinner and a perfect appetizer for parties. And the best thing is that your wings will be ready in less than an hour!
Star Ingredients
You can already read from the title that you need chicken wings, honey, and lemon pepper for this recipe to really shine, but here’s an explanation for why each ingredient is integral to the success of this dish:
- Chicken wings – When buying chicken wings, you can choose either fresh or frozen. If you are using frozen, make sure to defrost the wings before use, in a refrigerator overnight.ย
- When it comes to their shape, you can choose whole chicken wings, or cut them into mini wings and drums. You can also find these pre-cut and they are often labeled as party wings.
- Lemon pepper – The most important flavor here is the lemon pepper. This fantastic seasoning is made from granulated lemon zest and black pepper. This lemon pepper mix can be used for other dishes, but I prefer it with chicken.ย
- Lemon juice – To give extra freshness, you can use additional lemon juice. Always use fresh lemon juice, as it has the brightest flavor.
- Honey – The honey for this dish can be any type of honey. By any type, I mean plain honey. Do not use flavored honey, like vanilla, cinnamon, or caramel sauce flavored. Although these are great to eat alone, they do not work in savory dishes.ย
Preparing The Chicken Wings
If you are using frozen chicken wings, make sure to defrost them in a fridge overnight before you use them.
We’ll have a full recipe below, but just so you know what you’re getting yourself into, here’s how to prepare you chicken wings:
- Season the chicken wings with salt and pepper.
- Coat the chicken wings with some flour.
- Fry the chicken wings in heated oil until cooked through. To cook your wings, you can either fry them, air-fry them, or bake them in the oven. Every option is delicious and it is completely up to you.
- To make the honey sauce, you will just have to combine all the sauce ingredients in a sauce pot and simmer for a few minutes. Pour the warm sauce over the warm chicken wings and toss gently to combine. Broil the wings for another 3-5 minutes. And that’s it – your honey lemon pepper wings are done!
How To Serve Honey Lemon Pepper Wings
These wings are best served immediately. They are most succulent and flavorful when they are freshly baked. Still, if you make these ahead, you can easily reheat these in preheated oven at 350ยฐF for 10-15 minutes.ย
These wings are perfect when sprinkled with chopped parsley, spring onions, or sesame seeds.
They are very flavorful, so I never serve these with any dip on the side. Still, if you think some dip would pair nicely with these, let me know. I just love to drizzle these with some fresh lemon juice just before serving!
Tips For The Perfect Chicken
- While many traditional recipes call for a little more than seasoning, oil, and heat, the real challenge is cooking the skin. To help you get the best possible crunch, a simple mixture of flour and salt will do the trick. These ingredients will draw out some of the excess moisture and help the skin blister, producing a wing with extra crisp.
- When frying wings, make sure that your oil is heated through. For instance, if your oil is not hot enough before you add the wings, the result will be a soggy pile of fat-soaked wings.
- Try frying wings twice. This is my favorite thing to do. Double frying will give extra crispy skin and juicy meat. Double frying with wings that have a honey coating is not recommended because the honey may easily burn, but you can place these under a broiler for the same results.
