Bourbon Street Chicken And Shrimp Recipe (Applebee’s Copycat)

One of my favorite dishes to order at Applebee’s is their Bourbon Street chicken and shrimp. It is a blackened chicken and shrimp with cajun seasoning and a garlic butter sauce poured on top.

It’s also served with sauteed onions, mushrooms, and mashed potatoes. This cajun dish is a perfect blend of sweet and spicy with a subtle smoky flavor!

Contrary to the name, Bourbon Street chicken actually doesn’t have any bourbon in the recipe. It gets its name from the popular Bourbon Street in New Orleans, a place full of history and great food.

The trick to getting the perfect blacked chicken and shrimp is to use a skillet on medium-high heat to get the perfect char.

You could also use an outdoor grill if you are making this dish in the summer. For this recipe, all you will need is a cast-iron skillet!

What Is In Cajun Seasoning?

If you would like to make your own cajun seasoning, mix 1 tablespoon of each of the following spices:

  • Smoked paprika
  • Garlic powder
  • Onion powder
  • Ground black pepper
  • Ground white pepper
  • Dried oregano
  • Cayenne pepper
  • Thyme
  • Kosher salt

How Do I Make Mashed Potatoes?

To make mashed potatoes, boil or steam 6 red potatoes until soft. Leave the skins on the potatoes.

Add the potatoes to a bowl with a pat of butter, 2 tablespoons of cream or mascarpone cheese, and salt and pepper.

Mash it all together with a potato masher or the back of a wooden spoon until you have your desired consistency. I prefer my mashed potatoes with a little texture, but feel free to mash it to a smoother consistency if you would like.

What Is Bourbon Chicken?

Bourbon chicken is a popular Cajun recipe, named after the Area in New Orleans, not the alcohol. It is a blackened chicken with cajun spices and a garlic butter sauce.

Tips For Cooking The Best Shrimp

To get that perfectly charred shrimp, you must dry off the shrimp with a paper towel before adding the seasoning and oil. Any excess moisture will cause the shrimp to steam instead of sear.

Make sure your skillet is nice and hot before adding the shrimp. Cook for 3 minutes on each side and take them immediately off of the heat.

How To Make Bourbon Street Chicken And Shrimp Recipe

Step 1

Assemble your ingredients.

Season your chicken breasts and shrimp with the cajun seasoning and drizzle with olive oil.

Heat a cast-iron skillet or a grill to medium-high heat. Sear the chicken for 6-8 minutes until it reaches an internal temperature of 165°F.

Step 2

Once the chicken is cooked, remove it from the pan.

Add another tablespoon of oil to the pan and cook the shrimp until they are nicely charred, about 3 minutes on each side.

Step 3

Remove shrimp from the skillet and saute the onions and mushrooms. You can also saute the onions and mushrooms in a separate skillet while the shrimp and chicken are cooking to save time.

You may need to add a little more butter to the skillet.

Step 4

Once the chicken, shrimp, and vegetables are cooked, feel free to keep them in a slightly warm oven while you make the garlic butter sauce.

To make the garlic butter sauce, add a ⅓ cup of butter and the chopped garlic to the previously used skillet.

Let the butter bubble up and the garlic cook (about 3 minutes) on medium heat.

Once the garlic is slightly browed, add ½ cup of broth and lemon juice to the skillet, and let it cook down until it turns to a sauce consistency.

Plate the chicken, shrimp, and vegetables and pour the garlic butter sauce on top. Serve with mashed potatoes and enjoy!
