These vegan French fries are super crispy and flavorful! These French fries are a perfect side dish, but also work great as an appetizer or snack.

When you think about French fries, you probably think they are 100% vegan — they basically should be, but so many people fry them in duck fat or lard, which are obviously not vegan and not at all suitable for those following a vegan diet.

Many believe the perfect French fries can only be achieved by frying them in animal fat, but this recipe proves them wrong. It’s absolutely possible to make the perfect French fries with just plant-based ingredients!

Why I Love This Recipe

Crispiness: These vegan French fries are super crispy! They are so crispy, that when you tap them on the kitchen counter you will hear a knocking sound.

Simple Ingredients: These vegan French fries are amazing as they are made with kitchen staple ingredients.

100% Vegan: Not all recipes you find online are vegan. These are 100% vegan, but everyone will love them!

Ingredients And Substitutions

There are three main ingredients for vegan French fries: potatoes, oil, and salt! Here’s how to choose your ingredients from the myriad of options out there:

  • Potatoes: Choose Russet or Yukon Gold potatoes.  These two types of potatoes get crispy once fried or baked.
  • Oil: Use vegetable oil, or coconut oil if you do not have an issue with coconut flavor.
  • Salt: I prefer to use sea salt when making French fries. Table salt tends to bounce off freshly fried fries, while sea salt sticks nicely.

How To Get Perfect French Fries

The perfect French fries are not made by accident, but with proper preparation and cooking. Here are some tips to make the perfect fries!

1. Choose The Right Variety

Choose Yukon gold or Russet potatoes — these are the best for frying or baking!

2. Cut Them Properly

The perfect French fries have a perfect shape too. Cut them into long less than ½-inch slices. You can cut these with a knife or use a French fry cutter.

3. Prepare Them Properly

Rinse the fries well and submerge them in water. Place the bowl with the fries in a fridge for 2 hours.

Afterward, drain and pat dry the fries. This is important because any water will cause splashes of oil and may cause injuries in the kitchen.

4. Heat The Oil

The first frying will make your fries soft in the center. This is important as the perfect fries are soft in the center and crispy on the outside.

Once they are initially blanched in oil, remove the fries with a slotted spoon and place them on a wire rack lined with paper towels. Place the fries in a fridge until they are cooled down.

5. Give Them A Crisp

After the fries are cooled down, heat the oil again. Fry the cooled fries until they are crispy. Remove the fries with a slotted spoon and place them into a bowl.

6. Season Them Lightly

Season the fries with sea salt and toss them gently in a bowl, to coat them evenly.

French fries are traditionally seasoned with salt, and salt only, but you can season them with other spices.

If you want to add something extra, I would recommend chili powder, onion powder, or garlic powder. Don’t get crazy with these — use just a pinch!
