Vegan Herbed Swirl Bread Recipe
This herbed swirl bread might be one of my favorite things to bake in my oven. It’s the perfect mix of doughy and crispy, and the herbed butter in the bread is absolutely incredible!
I love bringing this to dinner parties; it’s a real crowd-pleaser. However, since I have so many friends and family that can’t have dairy, I decided to make a vegan version of this bread, and I have to say, it’s just as good!
This bread is garlicky, full of basil and oregano, and pairs beautifully with almost any dinner. Plus, it’s nice to look at!
Can I Use Regular All-Purpose Flour For This Recipe?
I would say bread flour is crucial when it comes to bread baking. It has a chewier texture and is a bit denser, so you need less of it than regular flour.
If you only have all-purpose flour on hand, you may need to add another 1/2 a cup.
How Do I Knead Bread?
To knead the dough, simply push the dough away from you using the heel of your palm, fold it over itself with your fingers, pull it back, and repeat.
Do this motion for at least 5-10 minutes, and this will ensure there is enough gluten in the dough to make a chewy loaf of bread.

Where Can I Find Vegan Butter?
Most, if not all grocery stores have vegan butter nowadays, though I will say they are not all created equal.
Miyoko’s brand has a vegan butter that is really good. It has a much better flavor and set of ingredients than regular margarine.
Can I Use Other Dairy-Free Milks Besides Cashew?
Absolutely! I went with cashew since it goes great with the savory flavors of the herbs and garlic, but unsweetened and unflavored almond or oat milk would work just fine.
How To Make Vegan Herbed Swirl Bread
Step 1
Assemble your ingredients.
Combine the warm water and yeast in a large mixing bowl.
Step 2
Add the oil, bread flour, and salt.
Gently mix and then knead the dough either with your hands or a stand mixer with a dough hook for 5-10 minutes until the dough becomes springy when touched.
Step 3
Shape the dough into a ball and place it into a greased bowl. Cover with plastic wrap or a damp towel and let it rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
While the dough is rising, make the herb butter.
Finely chop the basil and garlic cloves and add to a mixing bowl with the softened vegan butter and dried herbs.
Step 4
Use the back of a spatula to stir until all the herbs are evenly incorporated into the butter.
Step 5
Once the dough has risen, punch down the dough, and roll it onto a floured surface.
Step 6
With your hands, shape it into a rectangle, and roll it out.
Spread the herb butter equally over the dough.
Step 7
Roll the dough into a roll, like you would cinnamon rolls, and cut a slit down the middle, leaving 3 inches uncut.
Step 8
Take the two ends and intertwine them until you have a twisted loaf of bread. Pinch and tuck the end of the bread.
Step 9
Place the loaf on parchment paper on top of a baking sheet and let it rise for another 30 minutes to 1 hour.
