Stroopwafels have never really lost their popularity. But, as soon as people found how easy it is to make them, a search for the ultimate stroopwafel iron ensued!

However, an unfortunate realization for many was that there aren’t any appliances specifically labeled as a “stroopwafel iron.”

So, what do you do when you want to make stroopwafel?

What are the best stroopwafel irons? The best stroopwafel irons can make very thin waffles, between 1/6 and 1/4-inch thick. They should also be round and at least 3 inches in diameter. Your appliance should also be of good quality.

Today, we will have an in-depth look at the best options for stroopwafel irons out there! We also included a comprehensive buyer’s guide that will help you choose other in-store products as well.

What Is A Stroopwafel?

Stroopwafel goes by many names, some of which you may be more familiar with.

The most popular include syrup waffles, caramel waffles, and treacle waffles. Stroopwafels are incredibly popular Dutch treats that very quickly became equally popular around the globe!

While you may be able to find stroopwafels sold at your grocery store, depending on where you live, they are far better when made from scratch!

Homemade stroopwafels contain fewer preservatives (which gives them a strange texture) and artificial flavors.

How To Make Stroopwafels

These waffles are simple in concept but incredibly unique in flavor and texture. First, you make a thin waffle layer.

The stiff dough (unlike traditional waffle batters) is made from a combination of flour, butter, milk, eggs, yeast, and brown sugar.

A piece of dough is then pressed flat into a waffle iron until it becomes crispy. Once fully cooked, you should remove the edges while the waffle is still hot. That makes it easier to separate the top and bottom layers of the waffle.

Once separated, you can make a delicious warm caramel filling. It is then inserted between the two separated waffle layers and reassembled. As the waffle cools, the caramel helps bind the layers together while adding a delicious flavor.

What Are Stroopwafel Irons?

A stroopwafel iron (as the name suggests) is a specific type of waffle iron specifically designed to make the thin stroopwafel layer.

But, if you thought that all stroopwafel irons are the same, unfortunately, you are wrong. And it’s rare to find a waffle iron that is specifically labeled as a stroopwafel iron, since many waffle irons are versatile, able to make a variety of waffle types.

There are many different designs out there. The only thing they all have in common is the round shape and thin honeycomb waffle pattern they make.

Stroopwafel irons come in electric and stovetop forms. The design of each remains very similar, as we have mentioned, but how you use them is different. That is an important deciding factor to consider before purchasing your own.

Then, the only other thing that makes one waffle iron better than another is the size of the “indents” on the surface. If they are too big, the waffle won’t separate properly. Therefore, your pattern should be small and very shallow.

The Ultimate Buyer’s Guide For Stroopwafel Irons

There are thousands of different waffle iron options out there. But, not all of them will work as a stroopwafel iron. These types of irons have to have specific characteristics to create these unique waffles.

So, in this section, we will look at every element you should look out for when choosing a  stroopwafel iron. Not all products are labeled as such, but many will still do the job perfectly fine.

All stroopwafels are round. The size may vary slightly, but on average, they are about 3-6 inches (8-15 cm) in diameter. You can get some irons that are smaller or bigger. But these tend to limit the ways in which you can use your iron.

Do not choose square waffle irons as they won’t work for stroopwafels. They aren’t the right shape. They also don’t break apart as perfectly as they should.

Plus, if you buy a round stroopwafel iron, you can make waffle cones (which virtually all of these appliances can make).

The pattern of a stroopwafel is unique and not like thick traditional Belgian or American waffles.

Because the waffles are incredibly thin, the patterned surface shouldn’t have large blocks or deeply indented ones. If they are, the waffle won’t be able to separate into two pieces.

And the waffle iron itself should not make very thick waffles. At the most, a stroopwafel can be about 1/4-inch (0.64cm) in thickness. The best thickness is 1/6 inch (0.42cm) thick.

Anything more, and it won’t be crispy enough. And anything less will make it too wafer-like.

This thickness is ideal for crispy stroopwafels to be separated into two thin layers with filling in the middle, like a delicious sweet sandwich. After the filling is added you will still have a beautiful thin crisp waffle on top and bottom.

But, also keep in mind that you aren’t making cones. So, don’t buy a waffle iron that makes 1/8-inch thick wafers that are only meant to make cones. These won’t split apart because they aren’t thick enough.

Type Of Waffle Iron

There are two main options you can choose: electric or stove top. Naturally, each has its own list of pros and cons.

Stove Top Waffle Irons

Stove top waffle irons are very durable (especially if made from cast iron), are easy to clean, easy to use, and you can very accurately manage the temperature.

That means you can determine to a much more precise degree how quickly your waffle cooks and how crisp you want it.

The downside to stovetop handheld waffle irons is that they require more focus when you use them. And they take more work to operate.

They are also often more difficult to find. And, you need a gas stove to make your waffles well. You can do it over electric or induction (depending on the metal), but gas is really the best.

Electric Waffle Irons

An electric waffle iron requires a lot less effort when used. You can control the temperature to some degree, and you can even set timers on some. There are also some models which enable you to cook multiple waffles at the same time.

But, electric waffle irons are expensive, use a lot of electricity, and don’t always give you the perfect texture.

So, it is important to consider the pros and cons of each, but also choose a high-quality option.

Quality Versus Price

Not all appliances with high price tags are good quality! Many of the appliances we own are the more “budget-friendly options” that work incredibly well.

The key is choosing a waffle iron that matches your price and that is of good quality! Our list includes the best of the best.

But, if you do happen to see a stroopwafel iron in a store that you like, it may be worth doing a Google search before buying. You can look at reviews of that specific model before buying.

Researching a product doesn’t have to take days or even hours. But, putting in that little bit of time could potentially save you hundreds!

Here’s more about each of these great waffle irons in more detail:

1. CucinaPro Waffle Cone Maker

Now, despite the name of this product, it is one of the best stroopwafel makers you can buy.

Here’s why:

This appliance has been designed with a large surface area. That means you can easily adjust the size of your stroopwafel dough balls to make bigger or smaller waffles.

Furthermore, the machine doesn’t have to be closed all the way to create wafer-thin waffles. Don’t press the iron down all the way so that the dough can cook to the thickness you choose. You’re not limited to the razor thin thickness.

This appliance specifically is very multi-functional, making it a great option to have around the house. And, it is of great quality at an extremely affordable price!

The set also comes with a cone-shaping and bowl-shaping tool. Further increasing its versatility!

The biggest downside is that it is electric (which may only be an issue for some buyers), and it isn’t as easy to clean as stove top (non-electric) appliances. But, its non-stick surface makes it easy to wipe down with a damp cloth.

2. Brentwood Blue Waffle Cone Maker

If you are looking to gift someone a stroopwafel iron, this is a great option!

It comes at an affordable price, has adjustable temperature settings, and has an uber-cute aqua blue design!

This appliance is also technically a cone maker, but as we’ve now established, don’t press the dough down all the way.

If you only press it until the dough reaches about 1/6 to 1/4 of an inch, it will cook in that way and can still be separated.

This waffle maker is very easy to use, and much like a stovetop waffle iron, you can easily control the temperature. And it even has a “preheated” light indicator to show when your iron is hot enough to use.

3. Palmer Electric Belgian Cookie Iron

This is another great electric appliance that works well for making stroopwafels. Again, despite the name, it is multi-functional.

This “cookie iron” makes perfectly thick stroopwafels that can be divided and filled.

The best part about this specific product is that you can make two waffles at the same time! That saves you a ton of time, especially on busy mornings!

It has a very simple design and is easy to use. The cast-aluminum material it is made of helps the plates heat very quickly and evenly to create crisp thin waffles.

The biggest downside to this appliance is that it doesn’t come with adjustable temperatures. And, as with all electric kitchen appliances, it isn’t as easy to clean.

Other than those two minor setbacks, this is a great product at an affordable price.

4. WooPower Double-Sided Waffle Iron

Our first stove top stroopwafel iron is another great multi-purpose option.

Its double-sided design allows you to make pancakes, omelets, thin crispy waffles (or stroopwafels), and thick waffles.

For stroopwafels specifically, we would use the two flat sides that come together to create thinner waffles. As with the electric cone makers, don’t press the iron together completely. And, don’t overfill it with large dough balls. Otherwise, they will pool out of the sides.

This handheld waffle iron is made from aluminum which heats quickly. That will help cook crisp thin waffles in no time. And the nonstick coating that has been added makes clean-up a breeze!

The biggest downside to this option is that it is made from aluminum. This material, while it does work great, is a little less durable. It will last a couple of years, maybe even a decade or two, but not a lifetime.

The non-stick coating will also eventually deteriorate, as they all do. But, at the price this tool comes, it isn’t a major loss.

5. TFCFL Electric Commercial Waffle Maker

If you are looking for a sturdier waffle maker that is more intended for everyday use (or even in a small store), then this is a great starting option!

For a commercial waffle iron, it is very well-priced for the quality it is!

This waffle iron is bulky. It has non-slip feet to secure the appliance down. Then, the entire thing is made from stainless steel. The iron plates specifically have been coated with a non-stick layer.

The waffle maker also comes with a spiral handle (which doesn’t heat as easily), a temperature control dial, and a timing control dial. A bonus is that it has an on and off switch and a “preheated” light indicator.

All in all, this waffle maker is perfect for making many kinds of thin waffles, including stroopwafels. It has been designed to comfortably and efficiently make many perfect waffles consistently.

The downside as we have mentioned is that this is a bulky appliance and more expensive. But, it is intended for commercial use and will last you decades!

6. CucinaPro Mini Waffle Maker

This appliance has specifically been marketed as a “mini ice cream cone” maker.

But, we have personally tried this one for making stroopwafels, and it works like a dream!

The waffle iron creates the perfect thickness for stroopwafels so that you can still separate the layers for the filling. And, arguably, the best part of this machine is that you can make four mini waffles simultaneously!

While the machine says “mini” they make the perfect size for stroopwafels too. Just another bonus! The surface is easy to clean and perfectly non-stick. And there is even a temperature control knob.

So, why did this product rank so low on our list? Simply because the options mentioned above are better. This one is also slightly higher in price and a lot less versatile. But that doesn’t make it any less of a great option!

7. PetriStor Granite Stove Top Waffle Maker

Last but certainly not least, we finish our list with another handheld stove top waffle iron. This product has been designed for one thing only: thin waffles.

You can make a wide variety of waffle products using this particular tool. Its very large surface area also helps give you more versatility.

And from these waffles, you can make even more products: cannoli, ice cream cones, waffle bowls, and much more.

But, beyond that, for making a stroopwafel, it is perfect. You can easily adjust the temperature and speed at which the dough cooks. And you can change the size and thickness with ease too.

This tool is made from durable non-stick granite materials. You can use it on gas, electric, ceramic, and coal (or wood) stove tops. It is extremely easy to wash and even dishwasher-safe!
