We’ve even mentioned any potential downfalls for each product so you can weigh them against the benefits.

What is a Julienne Peeler?

A julienne peeler is a small, hand-held vegetable peeler that has serrated teeth. Instead of peeling off a strip of peeling, it creates ribbons or thin strips out of your vegetables.

Having thin strips of fruits and vegetables is handier than you may realize. Not only can you jump into the zoodles trend, but you can also start making your own coleslaw with more than just cabbage.

Tiny slices can be more enjoyable to eat raw than larger bites, so suddenly carrots, broccoli stalks, turnips, and even beets can be featured in your salads and sandwiches without overwhelming the dish.

It’s also perfect for stir-fries or to be cooked with noodles. It also makes sushi prep much quicker and more precise.

Of course, julienned fruits and vegetables also made beautiful edible garnishes that are sure to impress at any dinner party or brunch.

1. UberChef Dual Julienne & Vegetable Peeler

Check Current Price on Amazon

This is without a doubt the highest quality, sturdiest julienne peeler we could find.

It is extremely sharp, making it easy to use without using a great deal of force, and it’s dishwasher safe so you don’t have to risk your fingers while you wash it.

It’s ergonomic and easy to hold comfortably and it feels as high-quality as it looks.

Key Features:

  • An incredibly sharp blade makes quick work of even the hardest vegetables, including sweet potatoes.
  • Includes a cookbook with 17 recipes to help you test out your new julienne skills.
  • Made from culinary grade Stainless Steel for quality and it’s dishwasher-safe.

Biggest Drawback: It is very sharp and must be handled with care. The blade flips to rotate between a traditional peeler and the julienne serrated blade.

You do not want your hand to slip and get caught in either of these blades. This tool should be handled as cautiously as any of your other chef’s knives.

2. OXO Good Grips Julienne Peeler

OXO makes undeniably great kitchen tools. Their Good Grips collection elevates an average utensil multiple levels in terms of comfort and stability.

A julienne peeler may seem like a simple tool, but if you don’t have a good grip on your peeler, it can spell disaster for your vegetables.

Luckily, this peeler will make sure that never happens to you.

Key Features:

  • Cuts up to 14 strips per pull of the blade, getting through all your produce quickly and easily.
  • Has a built-in protector that protects your fingers while the peeler is stored in a crowded drawer.
  • Rustproof and dishwasher safe with a soft, non-slip handle.

This product is great for all users, but if you have small hands or find a wide handle difficult to grip, OXO also has a smaller version, called a Prep Julienne Y-Peeler that is just as reliable as the main version.

Biggest Drawback: The blades for this peeler are quite fine. So if you julienne hard vegetables like sweet potatoes and you don’t have a steady hand, the blade tips can bend and won’t produce perfectly even stripes.

They are still very sharp, however, so bending them back into place should be done with pliers, not your fingers!

3. Deiss PRO Julienne & Vegetable Peeler

Deiss is a well establish kitchenware brand that provides a lifetime guarantee on all their products, which helps build confidence in the purchasing process.

With this particular product, they’ve also included a cookbook to help you familiarize yourself with the various techniques and functions that this tool offers.

  • The multi-functional tool can be used for peeling, slicing, garnishing, removing potato eyes or small bruises, and, of course, julienning.
  • Made from high-quality stainless steel and has a comfortable non-slip grip handle.
  • Has a hanging tab at the bottom so that you can hang it safely rather than tossing it into a crowded utensil drawer.

Biggest Drawback: This tool, and most other julienne peelers as well, takes some practice to master. If you’re used to other julienne peelers, this one may feel a bit more awkward at first because it needs to be held at a different angle.

However, the manufacturer has done a great job at including instructions and even emails tips and best practices to help you learn how to use their very sharp peeler safely.

Key Features:

  • This multifunctional product has two blade styles for peeling and julienning, dig holes on either side of the blade for easy spot removal, and a hanging hole.
  • Comes with a cleaning brush so that you can remove any pieces of veggies that may have lodged into the blade without putting your fingers at risk.
  • Food grade stainless steel is anti-rust and dishwasher safe.

Biggest Drawback: The julienned strips seem smaller from this peeler than most of the other designs, which can be a great thing for great-looking garnish or salad fixings, but isn’t as ideal if your goal is vegetable noodles.

Julienne Peeler Vs Spiralizer, What’s the Difference?

If you’re trying to decide whether to purchase a julienne peeler or a spiralizer, there are a few major differences to note that may sway your decision one way or the other.

Julienne peelers are generally very easy to use, quick to clean, and, because they’re small hand-held devices, they’re quite accurate as well. They’re also inexpensive.

Spiralizers create long, spiraled noodles from nearly any type of vegetable. The higher the quality of the product, the more reliable it will be for large vegetables or very hard vegetables.

Spiralizers are often more expensive and slightly more complicated, but they may also be safer to use with less chance that your fingers will be impacted by the blade.

A julienne peelers, as long as it’s good, sturdy quality, will generally work effectively on hard vegetables and even better on large veggies than small ones.

The biggest difference between the two devices is time you spend using them. Spiralizers are astonishingly quick whereas julienne peelers can take quite a bit of time to make a full serving size or even multiples.

What is a Julienne Cut Size?

Very technically, a julienne cut should be a matchstick-size and shape, approximately 1/8″ wide and deep, and only 1–2″ long. With a julienne peeler, you can slice as long as the vegetable you are preparing.

If you’d like to commit to the 2-inch length of a matchstick, you can use a standard knife to trim your noodles once they’re all prepared.

How to Use a Julienne Peeler?

Each julienne peeler may have slightly different usage instructions or techniques.

But generally, you use them the same way you would operate a vegetable peeler, like so:

  1. Depending on what vegetable you’re slicing, you may want to peel it first. If not, keep in mind the first pull from your blade will create thin slices that are mostly peeling.
  2. For safety purposes, you may want to stabilize the vegetable you’re julienning with a fork, rather than your fingers.
  3. Press and hold it down firmly on a cutting board and use your peeler to pull away from the fork, making even slices all the way through the fruit or vegetable.
  4. Once you reach the end, shake the slices off your peeler and return to the top, pulling the blade all the way down through the vegetable again.

Repeat this process until you’ve julienned your entire vegetable.

How Do You Julienne Cut an Onion?

Because onions have so many layers, you cannot effectively julienne them using a peeler. You must use a knife.

The best technique for julienne cutting an onion is as follows:

  1. Cut off the stem and the root ends of your onion.
  2. Peel your onion.
  3. Lay the onion flat on one end and slice it in half.
  4. Working with half the onion at a time, make angled slices through your onion that are approximately 1/8” thick.
  5. If your onion begins to feel unstable as you near the end, flip it over and repeat the process.
  6. Repeat on the other half of your onion.
  7. Toss to separate the pieces.

Angling your knife as you slice helps to create a flatter, more uniform shape, rather than a half-moon in various sizes with some odd ending bits.

It does take practice to perfect though and you must have a very careful grip on your onion to keep your fingers safe.
