But before you make that financial commitment, what does salmon roe taste like? Honestly, just because it is a delicacy doesn’t make it all that special in flavor. Salmon roe has a relatively bitter flavor. If you are a super-taster (someone who is sensitive to bitter flavors) then you will likely not enjoy it. It also has a definitive fishy flavor underlined with subtle hints of sweetness.
What makes salmon roe stand out from other types specifically is that it brings forward the natural flavors of the fish itself. Salmon has a mild flavor with sweetness and saltiness from the sea.
The texture of salmon roe is also unique. It has a very soft and tender texture. It almost melts in your mouth. Some people describe it as being creamy and like to pair it with other soft cheeses.
Nutrition Of Salmon Roe

Canapes are arguably where most people first come across salmon roe, shortly followed by sushi. Even in the movies, you will see this delicacy being presented to the rich and famous on golden canape platters!
Our easy go-to canape formula includes a basic salted cracker, cream cheese, smoked salmon ribbons, salmon roe (or caviar), and a sprig of dill.
Now, while our recipe is very common, you can be extravagant! We have seen people make these canapes in cookie cups paired with raspberry ad Parmesan. You can truly play around with a ton of flavors!
Sushi
As we have mentioned, sushi is another popular way where salmon roe and caviar are served. Being a traditional Japanese ingredient, it makes sense that it is so popular in Japanese dishes.
In sushi, you can even get salmon roe rolls. These are essentially seaweed wraps that have been stuffed with roe and garnished with a fresh herb like dill. These can be very rich and bitter if you aren’t familiar with the flavor.
So instead, try something that has been garnished with a few salmon roe eggs. This can be any type of sushi. But, usually, it is served with some type of salmon rill or cucumber roll.
Keep in mind, if the sushi you are buying is cheap, they probably didn’t use real salmon roe. Remember, these eggs are a delicacy and are priced as such.
