Can You Reheat Tofu?

Tofu is an incredibly tasty and healthy snack. Not only is it incredibly rich in protein, but it also packs a lot of nutrients and minerals.

The fact that it is low-calorie only works to its advantage. That said, it is wholly unsurprising to find that tofu has easily become a staple component of many healthy diets. 

Moreover, its sheer versatility as a healthy protein alternative should be enough to convince anyone to give it a try. It only makes sense, then, that you should always have it at the ready.

However, the sad thing is that most people are intimidated by the prospect of preparing tofu. This is perfectly understandable considering how easy it is to mess up.

But, this is no reason to steer clear of one the most nutritious foods around. This is where we come in.

If you’re wondering whether you can reheat tofu, we have good news. You can reheat tofu in a pan, in the oven, or even in the microwave. You will want to make sure not to overcook it and may prefer to use the pan or oven to maintain its crispy texture.

This guide will cover everything you need to know about tofu and the different ways you can try to heat it.

What Is Tofu?

So, before we begin, we must first answer this highly important question: what exactly is tofu? 

Tofu – Overview

Put simply, tofu is made from condensed soy milk. Traditionally, the fresh soy milk is mixed with a substance called nigari – a byproduct of the traditional seawater salt extraction process.

This mineral-rich substance acts as the coagulating agent that gives tofu that solid, albeit fragile and jiggly, form. Take note, however, that more modern techniques use precipitated calcium as coagulants instead of nigari.

The process that goes into making them is incredibly similar to cheese production as it also involves a certain level of fermentation to achieve the desired results. The tofu is then pressed into the solid white blocks that we are all familiar with.

Perhaps one of the oldest dishes around, tofu has a lot of rich history behind it. Tracing its origins to ancient China, it has since broken out of its country of origin and has become one of the most widely enjoyed snacks around. 

Understanding Tofu – Nutritional Content

Soybeans are one of the chief ingredients of tofu. That said, it is wholly unsurprising to find that it contains many nutrients and minerals.

Shown in the table below is a breakdown of the nutritional content of a 3.5-ounce or 100-gram portion of tofu:

As you may have surmised from the table above, tofu is undeniably one of the most mineral-rich foods around.

Moreover, its total calorie count will fall squarely at 70 calories for a 3.5-ounce portion. Needless to say, this also makes tofu one of the most nutrient-dense foods around.

Just take note that the level of magnesium and calcium can vary on the type of tofu you use.

To be more precise, the coagulant that was used during the production process can make all the difference. For instance, nigari is known to add more magnesium to the mix while precipitated calcium, as you would expect, will increase your tofu’s calcium levels.

In addition to this, you will have probably noticed the high level of protein that it gives you. At the same time, it also comes packed with the essential amino acids for your body.

Tofu is able to bring all of these and more without the usual downsides of meat such as high levels of fats. 

That said, it becomes perfectly understandable why you would want to make the most of the leftover tofu you have lying around.

That is why knowing the proper reheating procedures become incredibly important.

How to Reheat Tofu in a Pan 

The first reheating method that we need to look into is the pan method. Take note that this is the preferred heating method for many tofu-eaters.

After all, it is the simplest and most straightforward. Moreover, all you need is some oil, a pan, and a stovetop – no additional appliances necessary. 

The steps presented below are intended for when you are reheating plain tofu. That said, make sure that you follow the instructions closely:

  1. Take a tablespoon of olive or coconut oil and coat your pan with it. Make sure that all surfaces have a thin layer of oil as it is crucial to the heating process.
  2. As a rule, you will need to preheat the pan on medium heat and oil it first. Doing so will prevent the tofu from sticking to the pan and ruining your dish. Needless to say, this is something you shouldn’t skip. 
  3. Put the tofu in the pan once the oil is hot.
  4. Pull it out once the tofu has warmed through and has regained its crispiness.

Perhaps the most important part of this process is preheating the pan. This is crucial if you want the tofu to come out perfectly.

After all, contrary to what most people think, handling tofu isn’t really that complicated. You just have to take precautions to ensure that everything works out great. 

In this case, preheating a bit of oil on the pan should do the trick.

Of course, as a workaround, some people opt to coat their tofu with breading or flour before they put them in the pan to get that desired crisp. The choice is up to you, however, it may end up a wasted effort if you still fail to forget to pre-heat your oil.

If it hasn’t been made clear yet, the most important thing you want is for the tofu to become crispy again.

In more ways than one, the tofu’s texture will be the measuring stick of success when it comes to this heating method. 

How to Reheat Tofu in the Oven

For the next method, we’ll be using the oven to reheat your tofu.

Take note that ovens are able to produce dry heat when in use. This means that they will have no trouble heating your tofu in a matter of minutes, ensuring great flavor and texture.

To do this, make sure to follow these steps:

  1. Take the individual pieces of tofu and lightly coat them with oil. This will serve to prevent sticking and ensure optimal heat transference during the heating process.
  2. Take a baking sheet and put the tofu on top. Make sure that they are evenly spaced, preventing the cubes from touching each other. 
  3. Set the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
  4. Place the baking sheet full of tofu and leave it there for ten minutes.
  5. Once ten minutes have passed, take out the baking sheet and inspect the tofu – it should now have a crispy exterior. Serve immediately.

Take note that the steps above work best with a gas oven.

However, if you do not have one at home then there is no need to worry. This is because the procedure also works well with toaster ovens. After all, they work in the same way. 

How to Reheat Tofu in the Microwave 

Now, it is time that we look at how we can reheat tofu using a microwave oven.

So, before anything else, we need to note a quick caveat to this method:

Namely, if you are reheating fried tofu then you need to know that the microwave will have an adverse effect on its crispiness. 

Previous experience will tell you how this tends to happen whenever you reheat fried foods with the microwave.

However, we do have recommendations for reheating several of your favorite fried foods, like fast food, fried okra, or even fried eggs.

That said, if you do not mind your tofu being pleasantly chewier than usual, then be sure to follow these steps:

  1. Place your tofu in a microwave-safe bowl. Arrange them in such a way that there is enough space between the cubes as you do not want them to be touching each other.
  2. Sprinkle your water with a few drops of water. This will prevent it from drying up during the heating process.
  3. Set your microwave to low.
  4. Place the bowl or dish in the microwave and press start. 
  5. Heat for a minute and a half, but make sure to check every 30 seconds to see if the tofu has warmed all the way through. 

Needless to say, reheating tofu in the microwave can be a tricky business. After all, the appliance is incredibly powerful.

So, overcooking is a problem that can easily happen if you are not careful. That is why you need to do it at the low setting.  

Tofu is one of the most versatile foods around. There is certainly no shortage of ways to prepare and cook it, especially as a healthy and nutritious meat alternative.

That said, you should never let this superfood go to waste. So, be sure to remember these heating methods whenever you have some leftovers.
