Oreo French Toast is your next favorite thing for breakfast. This version of French toast combines the best ingredients — soft brioche bread, eggs, crunchy golden and dark Oreos, and on top of all that, some whipped cream and berries!

This French toast is a true delicacy for breakfast, brunch, or whenever you want to serve your guests some other type of dessert.

This Oreo French toast is so decadent — it’s full of flavor and it actually doesn’t take much longer than any regular French toast to make it!

The best thing about this French toast is its crunchy two-tone Oreo crust, which makes this recipe a total winner in my book.

Which Bread Is Best For French Toast?

When it comes to French toast, all loaves of bread are not created equal. It takes a special type of bread to have a truly amazing French toast!

Here is what to consider when choosing the perfect bread for French toast:

  • Sturdiness. No matter which French toast recipe you use, you will have slices of bread soaked in the milk-egg mixture. The bread you choose will need to be able to withstand a good soaking and frying in the pan without falling apart.
    • Always choose for a thick cut of dense bread, instead of finely sliced and airy slices.
  • Slight staleness. French toast is traditionally made with day-old bread because it absorbs the custard-like mixture better than the fresh ones. Also, this is a great way to use stale bread and reduce food waste.

So, which bread is the best for the French toast?

Brioche Bread

Brioche is a perfect bread for French toast. It is thick, sturdy, made from quality ingredients, and tender at the same time.

It is high in butter and eggs, and it is a perfect companion for the rich custard made with eggs, sugar, vanilla, and milk.

For these reasons and many others, brioche is the most popular bread for French toast!

Sourdough Bread

I love to use sourdough for French toast — make sure to check my recipe.

The sourdough tanginess adds a touch of complexity to the over-the-top sweetness of French toast. The flavor of sourdough bread slightly mimics the flavor of stale bread, so it makes an obvious choice.

In addition, sourdough is one of the sturdiest loaves of bread out there, and you will not have to worry about it falling apart.

French Bread And Baguettes

No surprises here — the baguette is perfectly suited for French toast recipes thanks to its size and crust.

French bread also typically has a thick consistency and a crisp crust, which makes it ideal for soaking.

Challah Bread

There is nothing worse than letting a perfectly good loaf of challah bread go to waste!

This traditional Jewish bread has all the qualities a bread for the French toast needs to have — it is sturdy, delicious, and eggy. Plus, the braided loaf makes a gorgeous, finished dish.

Which Oreos Are Best For Making Oreo French Toast?

Did you know you can find Oreos in over 60 different flavors? There are a ton of flavors to choose from when making this easy French toast. I went with Golden Oreos and Dark Oreos, but you can choose whatever you want.

Once you have decided which Oreos to use, you can either crush them or use a food processor to turn them into fine crumbs, which you will use to coat your French toast.

Suggested Toppings

The beauty of French toast is that you can serve it with so many different things. Here are a few suggestions:

  • Whipped cream. A generous dollop of whipped cream is always an excellent addition to a French toast.
  • Cream cheese. Instead of whipped cream, you can also top your French toast with cream cheese or labneh for a refreshing and creamy addition.
  • Fresh berries. Use any type of berries you want! My favorites are strawberries and raspberries.
  • Chocolate sauce or melted chocolate. This is an addition you just can’t go wrong with.

Oreo French Toast

Preparation time: 10 minutes

Cooking time: 15 minutes

Servings: 4

Ingredients

  • 4 slices of brioche bread, stale (1 day old)
  • 2 eggs
  • ½ cup of milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 7 Golden Oreos
  • 7 Dark Oreos
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • (Optional) Whipped cream, labneh, and fresh berries, to serve with

Instructions

1. Crush your Oreos either in a zip-lock bag or using a rolling pin, or process in a food processor, until you have coarse crumbs.

2. Place crushed Golden and Dark Oreos in two separate bowls.

3. In a bowl, beat eggs with milk and vanilla extract.

4. Dip the brioche bread slices into eggs and allow the excess to drip off.

5. Coat the bread slices with crushed Oreos on both sides.

6. Melt butter in a skillet over medium-high heat.

7. Cook the French toast for 3 minutes per side.

8. Serve French toast warm, with a dollop of whipped cream or labneh and some fresh fruits on the sides.

Notes

  • Use a slice of bread that is slightly stale — not crispy stale, just day-old stale bread.
  • Do not oversoak the bread. When coating your bread, you want it to be more of a quick dunk, than a prolonged soak. This also depends on how stale your bread is — the staler it is, the longer it can soak without breaking!
  • Flip gently — when flipping your French toast, do it gently, the same as if you were flipping pancakes.
