When it comes to taking your desserts, fancy coffee drinks, pancakes, waffles, or other dishes to a whole other level of decadence, nothing does the job quite as well as a big mound of Cool Whip.

This handy little container of fluffy goodness is a staple in most kitchens across the country.

The best way to extend the life of your Cool Whip is to store it in the freezer and then take it out to thaw in the fridge overnight before you plan on using it.

But, what if you forgot to take the Cool Whip out of the freezer last night or this morning and now the count down is on to have it ready in time for dessert? Luckily, there are a few tricks you can use to defrost your Cool Whip fast.

So, how do you defrost Cool Whip fast? You can place it on the counter to thaw in about 2 hours, you can place it in a bowl of cool water to thaw in about 30-40 minutes, or if you’re in a real rush, you can try microwaving it on defrost in 30 second intervals for about 2 or 3 minutes.

Read on to discover how long it takes Cool Whip to thaw, how to do it safely, and what can happen if you try to rush the process (spoiler alert: you might end up with a container of melted liquid instead of fluffy whipped cream).

How Long Does Cool Whip Take To Thaw?

One of the best ways to prolong the life of your Cool Whip is to store it in the freezer until you’re ready to use it. If you plan ahead, it doesn’t take too long to thaw your Cool Whip with very little effort.

So, how long does it take Cool Whip to thaw? If you want to thaw your Cool Whip in the fridge, it will take about 4-5 hours to thaw to the perfect consistency.

If you’re able to plan ahead, you might want to take it out the night before you need it and let it thaw in the fridge overnight.

If you are like us and planning ahead isn’t always your strong suit, then there are a couple of other ways you can thaw your cool whip that take less time.

To thaw your Cool Whip on the counter takes about 2 hours or so. This method is great for folks who remember that they need to use their Cool Whip with a bit of time to spare.

Don’t leave it out longer than 2 hours, since dairy products can go bad if left at room temperature too long.

A faster way to thaw Cool Whip is to place it in a bowl of cool water, fully submerged (you might want to weight it down) for about 30-40 minutes.

Again, don’t leave it out too long and don’t use hot water since it can thaw it too fast and ruin the texture.

Finally, if you are in a real hurry, you can thaw your Cool Whip in about 2-3 minutes by using the microwave.

This method is the riskiest because if you don’t do it properly you can end up with a melted container of yellow goo, instead of delicious whipped cream.

How To Defrost Cool Whip Fast

If you don’t have time to let your Cool Whip thaw for 4-5 hours in the fridge, then there are a few methods that you can use instead, depending on how much time you have.

I’m going to work my way down the list in order from the most time to the least.

How To Defrost Cool Whip On The Counter Top

If you have more time to spare, but not quite the 4-5 hours needed to thaw your Cool Whip in the fridge, then you can try thawing it at room temperature on your kitchen counter.

This method takes about 2 hours, so half the time (or less) than defrosting your Cool Whip in the fridge.

The method for defrosting your Cool Whip on the counter top is pretty self-explanatory:

  1. Take your Cool Whip out of the freezer.
  2. Place your Cool Whip on the counter top out of direct sunlight. Keeping it out of sunlight will prevent it from heating up too quickly and losing its texture or spoiling.
  3. Check the Cool Whip after 30 minutes to see what the texture is like. Continue checking regularly until thawed to your perfect consistency.
  4. Move to the fridge after no longer than 2 hours so that the milk and cream don’t spoil.

Notes: If your kitchen is above 90°F, you won’t want to leave your Cool Whip out for longer than 1 hour, since the risk of spoiling increases as the temperature increases. Sometimes folks have found that this method changes the consistency, so keep a close eye on your Cool Whip.

How To Defrost Cool Whip In Cool Water

Another method you can use to defrost your Cool Whip is the cool or cold water method.

This method is probably the best in terms of maintaining a great consistency and not taking too much time to thaw. Defrosting Cool Whip in a bowl of cool water takes about 30-40 minutes.

We know it is tempting to use hot water to defrost your Cool Whip faster, but this would be a big mistake.

The heat can cause a couple of problems, including making the milk and cream spoil, or melting the Cool Whip so the consistency is ruined. Once it has melted, there’s no way to get it back to the consistency it was before, so you’re out of luck.

To defrost your Cool Whip in cool water follow these steps:

  1. Fill a medium-sized bowl with water. Make sure that it can fit your entire container of Cool Whip comfortably with space for the water.
  2. Place your container of Cool Whip in the bowl and weight it down with a mug or bowl on top (you might need to add water to the bowl or mug to keep them from floating away.
  3. After 30 minutes, check your Cool Whip. It will likely be ready to go at this stage. If not, place it back in the bowl for 10 minute increments until it is defrosted to your liking.
  4. Remove your Cool Whip from the bowl and use as desired to make delicious desserts, top your favorite coffee, or add to a stack of festive pancakes.

How To Defrost Cool Whip In The Microwave

The last way to defrost your Cool Whip if you’re really pressed for time is to use a microwave.

This method is best if you only have a couple of minutes to get your Cool Whip from Freezer to table, but it is a little risky as well. Defrosting your Cool Whip in the microwave takes about 2-3 minutes.

If you microwave your Cool Whip at too high of a temperature or don’t take the time to stir it at regular intervals, it can completely melt and leave you with nothing but a yellowish puddle of gooey liquid, which isn’t the most delicious topping for your treats.

To defrost your Cool Whip in the microwave follow these instructions:

  1. Remove your Cool Whip from the freezer and take off the lid. If you don’t want to microwave it in plastic, you can try moving it to a glass microwave-safe bowl.
  2. Place the Cool Whip in the microwave for 30 seconds on defrost.
  3. After the first 30 seconds, remove the Cool Whip from the microwave and give it a stir.
  4. Place the Cool Whip back in the microwave for another 30 seconds on defrost, remove, and stir.
  5. Repeat this process 3-4 more times until it’s fully thawed. Use as desired on your favorite recipes.

What Happens If I Defrost My Cool Whip Too Quickly?

While it may be tempting to rush the defrosting process of you Cool Whip, we highly encourage you not to do so.

You risk ruining the entire container by doing the following:

  • Microwaving your Cool Whip at a higher temperature or skipping the stirring process
  • Using hot water instead of cool water to thaw your Cool Whip
  • Placing your Cool Whip on the counter in direct sunlight

The higher temperatures can cause the milk and cream in the Cool Whip to spoil, which will make the entire thing taste gross and may even make you, your family, and any guests sick if they eat it.

If you try to rush the Cool Whip defrosting process, you also run the risk of melting your container so that you don’t even have any whip left at the end.

Instead, you’ll have a container of melted yellow gooey liquid that won’t be an enticing topping for any food that you make.
