Horseradish Mayo
This horseradish mayo is so simple to whip up and is a perfect condiment to add to your sandwiches, fish, or meat-based dishes.
I love horseradish, but it is a pungent condiment. I’m not the only one who thinks so, and many people avoid it, but it’s a really good condiment when paired with some other ingredients.
I love to pair it with Greek yogurt, but for a perfect sauce, my favorite is to mix horseradish with mayonnaise.
The Ingredients
As you can imagine, this condiment requires only a few ingredients. Mayonnaise, horseradish, and some salt. But I like to add a few extra ingredients to bring the mayonnaise to life.
Here’s what to use:
- Mayonnaise – Go with the classic full-fat mayonnaise. This will ensure you have an extra creamy sauce. In addition, the real mayonnaise made with eggs, oil, and vinegar has much more flavor than the light version which is usually made with water, eggs, and modified food starch.
- Horseradish – I suggest that you use prepared horseradish in this recipe. Prepared horseradish is made with grated radish root, vinegar, and salt. Unlike the prepared horseradish, fresh horseradish is a root that you grate and add to your sauces. The prepared horseradish blends better with mayonnaise, plus it is much more convenient.
- Lemon juice – This is an optional ingredient, but if you want to add something extra citrusy and elevate the entire condiment, then you can add lemon juice.
- Salt and pepper – These are the most basic ingredients in the kitchen. Nothing can go with salt and pepper. Still, don’t overdo it!
What Does Horseradish Mayo Taste Like?
This sauce is creamy yet tangy. The pungent heat of horseradish is still prominent, but it is toned down nicely by the rich mayonnaise and lemon juice.
This sauce is perfect for fish dishes, and I love to serve it with fish burgers or fish patties. There is just something magical in this combination.
What Else Can I Add?
This condiment can be easily pushed to one side or other, even with the horseradish inside. Here are some additional ingredients to add:
- Garlic powder – Just a small amount of garlic powder can be added to elevate the flavor of the condiment, without overpowering the horseradish. If you want, you can use a small clove of garlic instead.
- Chives – Fresh, dried, it really doesn’t matter. Choose whatever you have on hand. The chives will give a very light onion flavor and add a little bit of color to a dull white condiment.
Making Horseradish Mayo (Overview)
I don’t believe a recipe can be easier than this. Just gather your ingredients and whisk them all in a bowl, until well combined. You can serve the horseradish mayo immediately or leave it in the fridge for a few hours to let the flavors blend.
Also, if you want to add garlic, do not add chives, and vice versa. It will be too much flavor in one condiment, causing it to overpower whatever dish you use it on.
How To Use Horseradish Mayo
As mentioned, the horseradish mayonnaise can be used in a variety of dishes. It will add a kick of heat to any recipe you use it in.
I generally use horseradish mayo as a spread for sandwiches. I also love it with fish and seafood, but also on beef. You can also use it along with steak. In addition, it makes a wonderful dip for veggies, appetizers, or French fries.
How To Store Horseradish Mayo
This mayonnaise will keep for 2 weeks in an airtight container in the refrigerator. If you use homemade mayonnaise, this time will be shortened.
