These include carbonated water, sugar, phosphoric acid, preservatives, natural and artificial flavors, and sweeteners

As with most carbonated soft drinks, there isn’t much you can expect from Dr. Pepper as far as the nutrition goes.

A serving of this drink, which is 355 milliliters, contains 150 calories and 40 grams of carbohydrates. All of the carbs in this drink come from added sugar.

This is certainly not healthy. A container of Dr Pepper (355 ml) also contains 55 mg of sodium. 

So, there are no nutrients and benefits in Dr. Pepper aside from the joy you get from drinking it if you are a big Dr. Pepper fan. 

How Often Should You Drink Dr. Pepper? 

Drinking carbonated soda drinks every day is certainly not good for your health. These drinks, including Dr. Pepper, contain lots of added sugar.

There are 40 grams of sugar in a 355-milliliter can of Dr. Pepper. This is more than the recommended added sugar limit for men and women as suggested by the AHA

Additionally, keep in mind that nearly all Dr. Pepper varieties contain 41 mg of caffeine per serving.

Is There Pepper in Dr. Pepper?

One of the biggest questions about Dr. Pepper is if there is actual pepper in the drink. As mentioned earlier in the article, the drink is a blend of 23 flavors one of which is pepper.

But most of the peppery kick of the drink most likely comes from a few other components, including ginger and licorice

But the reason the drink was named so is not the pepper used to make it as you might think. At the time of making the drink, pharmacist Alderton worked at a drugstore run by a man called Morrison. 

Morrison, who liked the flavor of the drink, changed its name from the initial “Waco” to “Dr. Pepper”. The story goes that Morrison named the drink so after the father of the young lady he loved. 

How To Make Dr. Pepper At Home 

The true recipe of Dr. Pepper is kept secret. Even if it weren’t, you wouldn’t be able to make the exact replica at home due to the all artificial additives used to manufacture the drink. 

But if you love this drink, it is certainly worth looking for healthier alternatives. There are healthy soda substitutes you can find in stores, with little or no sugar at all and made with natural ingredients

However, finding a drink that comes close to the taste of Dr. Pepper might be rather challenging as the drink has a very complex flavor. But you can always try making your favorite drink at home. 

The good thing about DIY Dr. Pepper is that you know what goes into the drink and can make it as healthy as you want. You can also add flavors you feel like Dr. Pepper has and get your ideal healthy Dr. Pepper alternative. 

As there are many peculiar flavors in real Dr. Pepper, don’t be surprised when you meet some random ingredients in the recipes for the mock Dr. Pepper drink. Here are three easy DIY Dr. Pepper recipes you can give a try. 

Recipe #1:

Ingredients:

  • 20 fl oz of Coca Cola or Pepsi
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ tsp almond extract 

Add vanilla and almond extracts into the cola drink of your choice and mix. Chill before serving. 

Recipe #2:

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup carbonated water 
  • 1 ½ tsp natural cherry flavoring
  • Cola-flavored stevia 

This DIY Dr. Pepper recipe is for people trying to cut down their sugar intake.

Use your favorite carbonated water and sweeten it with cola-flavored stevia adding as many drops as you like. The cola flavored stevia will sweeten the drink without adding any calories while also giving it a hint of cola flavor. 

Mix in 1 ½ teaspoon of natural cherry flavoring.

Cherry notes are some of the most prominent flavor characteristics of Dr. Pepper. Adding them to your DIY drink will make it a lot more similar to its commercially manufactured counterpart.

Ingredients:

  • 1 qt carbonated water
  • 2 tbsp barley
  • 4 pieces of rock sugar
  • 1/8 tsp lemon extract 
  • Cinnamon sticks 
  • 3 bell peppers, chopped 

Pour the plain carbonated water into a bottle, mix in the rest of the ingredients, and let the mixture sit for a few hours. It is best to put the bottle in the fridge as the drink is best when it’s cold. 

When it’s time to drink your DIY Dr. Pepper, strain it and enjoy.

Note:

When making your own Dr. Pepper, you can add whatever additional ingredients you feel like there are in the drink to get the flavor closest to your perception. You can use lemon/orange zest, clove, allspice, ginger, anise, or mint.
