Oat flour cookies are a healthy version of classic chocolate chip cookies. These cookies are not made with classic plain flour, but instead a fiber-rich oat flour.

These cookies are just magical. The key “magical” ingredient is oat flour

The best part is that you don’t even have to go to the store to acquire oat float. Just place oats in a food processor and process until you have a flour-like powder.

The ideal types of oats for this are old-fashioned rolled oats. Choose these instead of instant oats or steel-cut oats, as the instant oats will be too mushy and the steel-cut oats will be too tough.

Benefits of Using Oat Flour for Cookies

Oat flour is a super healthy type of flour and offers many health benefits, but how beneficial is it when used in a cookie recipe?

The oats are among the healthiest grains in the world. They are a gluten-free whole grain and a great source of important vitamins, minerals, fiber, and antioxidants.

So, with a food processor and simple plain old-fashioned oats, you will have your own flour.

There is only one thing you have to think about when making oat flour, and that is to measure the oat flour after grinding it. If you measure the oats before grinding them, you may get a slightly different volume of flour.

Ingredients for Oat Flour Chocolate Chip Cookies

These cookies have an extra addition which makes them healthy. We are talking about delicious dark chocolate chips. Dark chocolate is rich in antioxidants and has healthy fats which are good for your body.

While dark chocolate makes these cookies healthier, you can choose any type of chocolate chip that you’d prefer.

Other common ingredients and substitutions for these oat flour chocolate chip cookies are:

  • Butter. You can substitute butter with oil. If you choose to do this, we found that coconut oil the best option.
  • Granulated white sugar. These cookies are made with plain white sugar, but if you want, you can use brown sugar. It will give the cookies a more complex taste and aroma thanks to the molasses in the brown sugar.
  • Oat flour. Some people find oat flour baked goods are a bit too dry. That may happen if you pack in too much of the flour.

Tips When Baking With Oat Flour

Oat flour is worth all the processing and blending part because it acts like wheat flour, but with a twist.

The oat flour lends soft and fluffy texture to baked goods with a mild flavor that takes a backseat to vanilla and butter:

  • The oat flour is made from gluten-free oats. Gluten is normally the binder in cookies and gives them elasticity. So, when baking with oat flour, make sure you have some kind of a binder – it can be egg, flax, psyllium husk, or even xanthan gum. These will prevent the cookies from falling apart.
  • Oat flour is the type of flour that lightens any baked good. So, when making oat flour cookies, they will be super light in terms of texture. So, it is advisable to pack the cookies with some type of fat, and it this case we used butter.
  • Oat flour combined with water gives a sticky dough. To prevent any dough from sticking to your fingers, you can either grease your hands with butter or oil or just wet your palms with plain water.

These oat flour cookies are something that is so worth investing time in. Unlike the traditional chip cookies, these have a better flavor, a better texture, and overall greater health benefits.

The recipe we have prepared for you is very simple and easy to follow, and we hope you will enjoy these with your family.
