Read below to learn more about chocolate syrups, the various types of syrups, and some of the best recommendations for chocolate syrup brands.
Good Vs. Bad Chocolate Syrups
Chocolate syrups are beloved all around the world and have a wide variety of uses.
Since you can find shelves upon shelves of different syrups, you are likely to end up staring into the void while scratching your head — which is normal.
Also, if you think that all chocolate syrups are the same, then we are about to burst your bubble!
Chocolate syrups may contain the same base ingredients, but small variances in quality and manufacturing techniques can make a huge difference in the overall flavor and texture of the syrup.
Every chocolate syrup includes the use of cocoa powder — well, at least the organic kind does.
See, chocolate syrup is available in two broad types:
- Organic And Authentic Chocolate Syrup. Made from premium cocoa powder and sugar.
- Synthetic Chocolate Syrup. Made from chemical flavorings and additives.
The organic variety of chocolate syrup is what you would want if you desire a highly delicious and premium-tasting syrup that you can use in just about any recipe as an ingredient or as a condiment.
The synthetic variety is a mixture of chemical flavorings that are designed to taste like chocolate. Some of these cheaper brands don’t even include cocoa powder or any organic chocolate product in the syrup.
Synthetic syrups are way cheaper, but can have noticeable differences in color, viscosity, and of course, flavor!
These particular syrups pair well with similarly cheaply made ice cream and can also be found around less developed parts of the world where people can’t afford quality chocolate syrups.
For this guide, we will be excluding all synthetic varieties of chocolate syrups and will only be focusing on high-quality and delicious chocolate syrup.
What Makes A Premium Chocolate Syrup?
Premium chocolate syrups are made from high-quality and responsibly sourced cocoa beans that are processed into a fine liquid called “chocolate liquor.”
It’s called “liquor” even though the mixture does not contain any alcohol.
The liquor is further processed and reduced, which turns it into a dehydrated fine chocolate powder.
This cocoa powder can be used to make several chocolate products – and it is also a key ingredient in chocolate syrup!
The chocolate powder is mixed with premium, organic sweeteners and other ingredients that change the viscosity and appearance of the mixture.
Big brands often have large R&D (Research and Development) centers that continuously assess, monitor, and adjust the quality and flavor of the syrups.
This helps the company improve the flavor and overall quality of the product using newer techniques and even better ingredient alternatives.
Types Of Chocolate Syrup
Premium chocolate syrup is available in many different sub-types.
Here are some of the most common varieties of chocolate syrups:
- White Chocolate Syrups
- Flavored Syrups
- Double Chocolate (Double Strength) Syrups
- Chocolate Sauce
- Sugar-Free Syrups
White Chocolate Syrups
White chocolate is an equally delicious counterpart of regular chocolate, but with one major distinction — white chocolate does not contain any cocoa powder.
So, where does it get its title and flavor from?
White chocolate syrups and general white chocolate products contain cocoa butter instead of cocoa powder.
The butter is extracted from the beans, which provides the same aroma and flavor of coffee – minus the color and caffeine content.
That’s right, caffeine can only be found in trace amounts in cocoa butter! This is why manufacturers usually add it later on to fortify their white chocolate products.
This type of syrup is widely used in combination with regular chocolate syrup, as it adds an interesting combination of color and flavor.
White chocolate syrups are typically sweeter than plain chocolate syrups and are more or less equally popular all around the world!
Flavored Syrups
Flavored or gourmet syrups are on the rise, and gourmet dark chocolate syrups are a great example of this sub-type!
These chocolate syrups provide more or less the same flavor, but with more focus on chocolatey notes.
Some flavored syrups can also be enhanced using artificial flavorings and ingredients. But in most cases, you can easily find premium-quality flavored syrups that provide extra “oomph” and a whole lot of chocolatey goodness.
Double Chocolate (Double Strength) Syrups
Did you know, back in the day, chocolate syrup was available in “single” and “double” strengths?
The single-strength chocolate syrup was ideal for making beverages and adding a distinct and pronounced sweet and chocolatey flavor, while the double-strength syrup was ideally used as a topping because of its thicker and richer viscosity.
While today you won’t find the same terminologies, some companies still offer varying textures for chocolate syrups with different branding.
Sundae Syrups, for example, are notably thicker and provide a fuller mouthfeel with greater texture.
Chocolate Sauce
Chocolate sauce is a thicker and more concentrated type of chocolate syrup.
This product is best suited for people who want to use syrup for cooking or baking purposes. It’s thicker and adheres better on surfaces, which makes it the ideal choice for spreading and decorating various baked goods.
Chocolate sauce can be thought of as double chocolate syrup, but keep in mind that every brand has its own unique approach to making syrups.
For example, Hershey’s could make a richer chocolate sauce product that is adequately thicker while another brand would rather focus more on a bitter-sweet and “drier” textured sauce.
Sugar-Free Syrups
Sugar-free syrups are an important comfort food for anyone who is looking to enjoy a chocolatey treat without worrying about added calories.
Sugar-free chocolate syrups were once thought to be impossible, given the critical role that sugar, particularly cane sugar, plays in the making of syrup.
But it didn’t take long before better sugar-free alternatives and flavoring agents were discovered that brought down the total calorie count of the product without affecting its flavor.
This way, you get to enjoy deep and complex chocolate flavors without raising your blood sugar levels!
Buying Guide for The Best Chocolate Syrup Brands
Before you jump onto our recommendations, here are a few key things that you need to keep in mind when going through our buyer’s guide:
- Check The Labeling
- Bottle Size
- Combo Deals
- Focus On Your Use
Check The Labeling
Looking for non-GMO chocolate syrups that are made without high-fructose corn syrup?
We recommend that you closely inspect the labeling of the chocolate syrup before making a purchase decision.
Chocolate syrups are notorious for having a multitude of additional ingredients that manufacturers claim to “improve” the quality or flavor of the product. These can also include dairy, soy, gluten, or other artificial flavoring agents.
Some chocolate syrups also commonly use modified corn syrup as a sweetener, which may not be suitable for people who are looking for a more organic option.
Don’t worry though, our list contains a range of diverse chocolate syrup products that cater to a lot of people — so, you are bound to find something that suits your needs!
Bottle Size
Most chocolate syrups are sold in 8oz – 16oz bottles, but you can also find some options that go around 4-5 pounds!
If you live in a household that regularly enjoys chocolate-based foods and extensively uses a lot of chocolate syrup to make beverages and other yummy recipes, then we recommend that you go for a larger size.
Not only because you’ll get more chocolate syrup — but because you will get more dollar value if you buy in bulk!
Remember, a great buying strategy would be to first try out the product by purchasing the smallest size and then committing to a larger bottle.
Combo Deals
There are also a lot of combo deals that you can opt for to get even more value from your purchase!
Please note that we only recommend getting combos from manufacturers that have a solid reputation and presence in the market. Brands like Hershey’s are a safe bet when it comes to purchasing in bulk.
If you want to move on to other brands for more variety, however, we recommend employing the same buying strategy as above: try out the products individually before investing in combos with larger-sized bottles.
Keep an eye out for brands that sell white and dark chocolate combos!
These two flavor combos are a delicious and fun way of garnishing your favorite foods — and since you’re buying a combo, you might save some money and get more value out of it too.
Focus On Your Use
This is perhaps one of the most important factors to keep in mind! Chocolate syrups are diverse but, as many people would tell you: most syrups are usually only good for just one purpose.
For example, a chocolate syrup that makes great egg creams, shakes, and beverages might be considered too sweet when used as a topping on other desserts.
This is why you should always keep your use in mind when shopping for chocolate syrups.
If you are looking for a chocolate syrup that makes tasty beverages, then glance at the reviews or check the description in detail to figure out what most people use the syrup for.
But if you aren’t picky about the versatility of chocolate syrup and don’t mind the minute discrepancy in thickness and flavor, then you could use any brand as an all-purpose chocolate syrup too!

What about Nestle Nesquick Chocolate Syrup?
Premium chocolate syrups are made from high-quality !!! Responsibly (who’s opinion?) sourced plays NO ROLE in the quality of a product. I have made my own syrup in a copper bowl from a recipe passed down from over 130 years ago. The Syrup is nearly black and super premium by today’s standards. It was used in Ice cream parlors in the teens and 20’s of the 20th century. Nowhere does responsibly sourced come into the equation. Torani is the only the product you mention that is any good. the person who wrote this never made chocolate syrup and never tasted anything really good. RX Sugar?? Seriously? The name should tell you it’s garbage, leave the plants alone. White Chocolate? NO! Fat sugar and Milk, Great… Bosco and Foxes were once quite good but no more. they added Corn syrup a long time ago and altered there ingredients / process. Now Bosco is totally different and of very LOW quality. Have not checked into Foxes.
Internet articles today are awful on every subject. All written in the same canned manner with the cadence and all with obvious ignorance to anyone who know anything on the subject. It almost seems like the goal is to misinform while giving the perception of informing.
