Air Fryer Hash Browns Recipe
Crispy, golden, and delicious hash browns are my favorite thing for breakfast. Hash browns are super easy to make, but they have an amazing taste.
These hash browns are a bit different than classic ones, as they are made in an air fryer. As you already know, the air fryer is such a handy appliance that cooks food in a healthier way, with less oil, but also makes things crunchier.
I am always amazed by its properties, and these hash browns from the air fryer have blown my mind.
Making Hash Browns (Overview)
The hash browns can be made in a skillet, baked in oven, or cooked in an air-fryer. The last method is the best for me, as hash browns from the air-fryer have perfect crunchiness.
Making hash browns in the comfort of your own home is very easy. You can always go and buy some from the store, but nothing compares to homemade hash browns.
You can make two versions of hash browns: hash brown patties or classic hash browns. For this recipe, I went with hash brown patties because they have a better taste and texture.
The hash brown patties have a crispy outer part, with a somewhat soft center. The classic hash browns are crispy all the way through.
Still, if you want to try out the classic version, here is how to make them:
- 1 lb potatoes, peeled and grated
- 1 ½ tbsp avocado oil
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- ½ tsp garlic or onion powder
Place the grated potatoes in a bowl filled with water. Let the potatoes rest for 20 minutes. This will remove the potato starch, so hash browns will be crispy. Drain the potatoes after 20 minutes and place them on a kitchen towel.
Squeeze the grated potatoes as much as possible. Combine the potatoes with spices and oil and distribute evenly in the air fryer basket.
Air-fry the hash browns for 15-20 minutes ate 380°F. Serve and enjoy.
Now, this version is too dry for me, but if you want, give it a try. My version of hashbrowns has same spices, but it also comes with small amount of breadcrumbs, and the potatoes are prepared differently.
You can find it all in the recipe card.
My Tips For Perfect Hash Browns
- Do not skip the soaking – Soaking the potatoes in cold water helps remove the starch, which will result in crispier potatoes.
- Dry the potatoes – For maximum crispiness, make sure to drain potatoes well. After the initial drain, squeeze the potatoes to remove liquid as much as possible.
- Always add seasoning to your hash browns – I know you will add salt and pepper, but make sure to add some garlic powder or onion powder. These really make a difference.
- Cook the potatoes for few minutes in microwave – Once you have your potatoes grated and drained, place them in a microwave safe bowl and pop into the microwave for a few minutes. This will allow you to squeeze even more liquid from the potatoes.
Can I Use Sweet Potatoes?
Yes, you can make sweet potato hash browns. Unlike classic potatoes, the sweet potatoes are less starchy so you will not have to soak them in water. A nice rinse will be just fine. Still, I do recommend draining them.
Any liquid that is left behind will just create steam, and the hash browns may become gummy and crispy. As with the classic potatoes, you will combine sweet potatoes with seasonings and some oil.
For the sweet potatoes, I recommend that you skip the breadcrumbs. You can cook these in the air fryer for the same amount of time.
