A pizza roll is everything you love about pizza – delicious sauce, sliced mushrooms, and melted cheese, but rolled in a pinwheel, and devoured in two bites.

They are often made as a kids’ snack, but why would adults not enjoy these too? This is a perfect dinner recipe, and for a new family-favorite meal, serve it with some fresh salad!

You can even garnish with a fresh basil leaf for a meal that’s as beautiful as it is tasty!

The Difference Between Yeast And Baking Powder Dough

Pizza dough is traditionally made with yeast. Sadly, there are people who are allergic to the yeast in pizza dough. So, can the pizza dough be made differently?

The answer is yes. The pizza dough does not have to be made with yeast, as other leavening agents work pretty well.

In, fact, baking powder is the favorite option for people who have a yeast allergy, but also those who do not want to wait the rising time.

Although baking powder and yeast are both used in baking, and they do elevate the dough, they are not the same. Baking powder is a chemical leavening agent, while yeast is a living organism.

The first difference between these two is the amount of time needed to make something with a certain type of dough. Yeast dough really takes some time, because the dough has to rise.

Yeast dough takes at least two hours to be plump. Baking powder, on the other hand, works immediately, and you will see its effect after 20 minutes, plus more when you place something into the oven to bake.

In the terms of flavor, yeast dough has that specific yeasty smell and flavor. Dough with the baking powder is quite neutral and you will not pick up any flavor besides the pizza toppings.

When we speak about texture, the dough with yeast may have more air bubbles inside. Also, I noticed the crust has a different feel to it once baked.

Dough with baking powder is a bit denser, but it will not compromise your pizza rolls. The flavor is, as mentioned, neutral. Dough with baking powder can be used to make different types of quick bread.

Here’s what goes into each type of dough:

  • Yeast dough – We stick with the true basics with this dough: water, flour, yeast, salt, and some sugar. If you are wondering what sugar is doing here, it is here just to feed yeast. Instead of sugar, you can also add some honey.
  • The baking powder – This dough is made with flour, salt, baking powder, and flour. Instead of baking powder and flour, you can use a self-rising flour that already has the leavening agent in it.

Both types of pizza dough are good to make ahead, as they can be stored in a fridge. Once the yeast dough has risen, punch it down and roll it out.

This dough can be stored in a fridge overnight. Same with baking powder dough. Make sure to bring the dough to room temperature before baking.

How To Bake The Perfect Pizza

When it comes to baking your pizza rolls or pizza, keep in mind that your oven has to be hot, 400-500°F. Make sure your pizza rolls are not over filled, because the filling may keep the dough soggy and raw after baked.

You can bake your pizza rolls in a muffin tin, on a pizza stone, or on a wire rack like I did. There may be some cheese spilling with the rack, but you will get nice and crispy bottom and upper side.

What Can I Use Instead Of Mushrooms?

Mushrooms are a versatile ingredient, and they’re delicious on pizza. Still, if you want to try something new, or just avoid mushrooms, you can use vegetarian sausage or pepperoni.

I also like to place some thinly sliced eggplant. If you want, you can make pizza with just the cheese topping. In that case, go with three different types for more flavor. I recommend mozzarella, feta, and provolone.
