Puerto Rican Tripleta Sandwich
If you have never had a Puerto Rican tripleta sandwich before, get ready for a flavor bomb! This is one of the most beloved street foods in Puerto Rico, and once you try one, you will understand why it has earned a loyal following both on the island and in Puerto Rican communities across the mainland United States.
Tripleta sandwiches are packed with 3 different types of flavorful and juicy meat, crunchy and crisp vegetables, and a trifecta of sauces. The name “tripleta” literally means “triple” in Spanish, referring to the three meats that make this sandwich so hearty and satisfying.
In the traditional recipe, it even comes with french fries (or fried plantains) on top, so feel free to add those on the side if you wish.
The sauce is a basic mix of ketchup, mustard, and mayo, with just a hint of Worcestershire sauce (the secret ingredient!).
For this recipe, I used an Italian bread loaf which I was able to cut into 4 servings, but feel free to use 4 different smaller loaves if you want.
Also, if you want your sandwich toasted and you don’t have a sandwich press, pressing firmly with a flat spatula in a frying pan works just as well.
This is a great recipe for a picnic, dinner on the beach, or even something you could throw together on a camp trip for the whole family!
What Is A Tripleta Sandwich?
A tripleta sandwich is one of Puerto Rico’s signature street foods, built around three seasoned meats layered on a long, pressed bread roll with fresh vegetables and a creamy house sauce. While people sometimes compare it to the Cuban sandwich, the tripleta has its own distinct identity rooted in Puerto Rican culinary tradition.
The sandwich traces its roots to the chinchorro culture of Puerto Rico, which refers to the roadside kiosks and open-air food stands found along coastal roads and town squares across the island. These chinchorreos are where locals go on weekends to eat, drink, and socialize, and the tripleta is a staple on nearly every menu.
What makes the tripleta unique is its combination of three different meats, typically beef, pork, and ham, all seasoned and grilled separately before being layered together. Each meat brings a different flavor and texture to the sandwich, and when combined with the tangy sauce, crisp lettuce, ripe tomatoes, and melted cheese, every bite is a balance of savory, creamy, and fresh.
If you visit towns like Luquillo, Piñones, or Guavate in Puerto Rico, you will find tripletas at almost every food kiosk. Each cook puts their own spin on it, whether that means adding tostones (fried green plantains) inside the bread, switching out the beef for chicken, or making a signature sauce with garlic and sofrito. That regional variation is part of what makes this sandwich so special.
It is a popular street food that pairs really well with fries, plantain chips, or a cold Medalla Light (Puerto Rico’s favorite beer).
What Bread Is Best?
I would go with a bread that is easy to press down or with a baguette-style loaf. Italian or French baguettes are the most commonly used (and found) options I would say.
If you do not have a sandwich press, just treat the sandwich like a grilled cheese by buttering both sides of the bread and browning it in a pan.
What Cuts Of Meat Should I Use?
Traditionally, a tripleta sandwich comes with strip steak, sliced pork chop, and ham. If you have 2 out of the 3, you can always substitute the steak or pork for chicken as well. It will still be so full of flavor!
Another tip: grilling the steak and pork chops does create the best flavor, but using a cast iron skillet with some olive oil is also a great option.
Can I Use Other Cheeses Besides Swiss Cheese?
If you do not have swiss cheese on hand, provolone would be the next best thing. A white cheddar would also be good if you are looking for a bit more flavor.
What Should I Serve It With?
A tripleta sandwich usually comes with fries or fried plantains, so that would be a great option. However, if you’re wanting to lighten up the meal a bit, you could always pair it with a salad.
I’m also guessing a classic Coca-Cola would be amazing with it!
How To Make A Puerto Rican Tripleta Sandwich
Step 1
Assemble your ingredients.
If the two types of meat (chicken/pork and steak) are not already cooked, grill the steak and chicken on a skillet or grill until cooked.
Marinating it before in lime juice and Worcestershire sauce is ideal, but if you’re short on time, you can just add the two while cooking.
Using a small mixing bowl, add the mayo, mustard, ketchup, and Worcestershire sauce and stir until smooth.

Step 2
Slice the lettuce and tomato.

Step 3
To assemble the sandwich, layer the swiss cheese, the ham, steak, and pork chop.

Step 4
Then add the tomato and shredded lettuce and spread the sauce onto the top layer of bread.

Step 5
Butter both sides of the bread from the outside, and heat up a sandwich press or skillet. Cook both sides of the sandwich until golden brown.
Serve with fries or a salad if desired.
Enjoy!
