Panera Bread is a popular restaurant in the United States that started as a bakery but now sells breakfast and lunch items, including soups and sandwiches.

When you order soup at Panera, you have the option to get it in a cup or a bowl — but what’s the difference between the two, and how much soup do you get in each? Panera bowl vs cup – Let’s find out!

So, what is the difference between a Panera bowl and a cup? A Panera bowl can hold 12 ounces of soup, whereas a Panera cup can hold 8 ounces. Which one you want to order will depend on how hungry you are and whether you plan to pair your soup with any other menu items.

Read on to find out how the bowl and cup soup container sizes from Panera compare with each other, if you get the equivalent of a cup or a bowl in the bread bowl, which menu items pair best with each cup and bowl size, and much more!

What Are the Soup-Serving Sizes at Panera?

Panera Bread offers a wide variety of delicious soups served in three different sizes, plus the option to enjoy them in a bread bowl. You can choose the best serving size according to your requirements and appetite!

The serving sizes at Panera Bread include:

  • Cup
  • Bowl
  • Bread Bowl
  • Group Soup

Panera Bowl vs Cup — Which One Should You Get?

A bowl is a round dish or container with a large diameter rim. It is bigger in width, smaller in height, and generally paired with utensils such as spoons.

Cups, on the other hand, are usually taller and less wide, plus designed to be held in the hand and used without any utensils.

You can enjoy your soup in either a bowl or a cup, depending on your preference. Since they vary in their size, their capacity to hold soup also varies.

At Panera Bread, a bowl of soup is perfect for a filling meal and contains 12 ounces of soup. On the other hand, a cup of soup contains 8 ounces of delicious soup.

You can enjoy a cup and a half of your favorite soup when you order it in a bowl. By that logic, if you are hungry and want a bigger serving of soup, we suggest you go for the Panera bowl.

How Many Cups Are in the Panera Bread Bowl?

Panera Bread is popular for its delicious soups and sandwiches that you can enjoy separately or together as a meal. Another fun way to eat these two is to combine the experience and order a bread bowl!

It may seem like from the look of it that you are getting an entire bowl of soup when ordering the bread bowl, while in reality, you’re just getting a cup. A bread bowl contains 8 ounces of soup, which is equivalent to a cup at Panera.

If you want to enjoy a bread bowl and want more than a cup of soup, there’s a workaround for that. You can order the bread bowl without the soup, get a separate bowl of soup (which is 12 ounces), and simply pour it in yourself!

Keep in mind, though, that soup in a bread bowl is a very filling meal and is packed with sodium and calories. You can choose not to eat the entire bread bowl after finishing the soup, but we don’t recommend it as it wastes food.

To eat the bread bowl, start first by eating the soup with a spoon so that it’s not filled to the brim and you can easily break off pieces of the bowl.

You can dip the lid of the bread bowl into the soup or spread some butter over it and enjoy it with the soup.

When the bread bowl is nearly empty, use a knife to slice into it to remove slices of bread and use your hands to break them into smaller pieces.

Eating a bread bowl is a pretty hands-on experience and may be messy. Don’t shy away from using your hands, but make sure you don’t break the bowl when it is full of soup.

How Many Ounces Are in the Group Soup at Panera?

The group soup serving size is the biggest of the lot and contains 32 ounces of soup. If you order a Panera group soup, it will be perfect for 4 people.

Panera has an extensive range of delicious soups that are perfect to warm your insides on a cold morning.

Their soup recipes are so popular that some are even available in supermarkets, while the Panera At Home division caters to ready-made soups available for you to take home!

Some of their most popular soups include:

Nothing beats a sandwich when pairing a menu item with soup. A hot bowl of soup and a filling sandwich are a perfect combination and make for a complete meal.

You can get a sandwich of your choice with either a cup or bowl of soup, depending on how hungry you are. A bowl has more soup than a cup and is the better choice when you want a hearty helping.

Some soups, such as broccoli cheddar soup, come with a pillowy baguette for dipping. Keeping that in mind, you may want to go with something lighter than a sandwich.

Panera has an extensive range of bread that you can pair with your favorite soup. You can choose from:

  • Sourdough Bread
  • Tomato Basil Bread
  • Black Pepper Focaccia
  • Brioche Roll
  • Artisan Ciabatta Loaf
  • Asiago Cheese Focaccia

Panera also offers a Duets value meal where you can pick two combinations out of half portion of a classic salad or sandwich and a cup of soup. The choices include:

  • Grilled Cheese & Creamy Tomato Soup
  • Caesar Salad & Homestyle Chicken Noodle Soup
  • Tuna Salad Sandwich & Ten Vegetable Soup
  • Greek Salad & Creamy Tomato Soup

You may also pair your soup bowl and cup with one of the many pizzas available at Panera such as the pepperoni flatbread pizza, Margherita flatbread pizza, and the sausage and pepperoni flatbread pizza.

How Big Are the Beverage Cups at Panera?

Panera also serves a wide range of hot and cold beverages for which it has separate cups from those used for soup.

Panera has the following beverages on its menu:

  • Charged Lemonades
  • Bottled Drinks
  • Soft Drinks
  • Espresso Bar
  • Coffee
  • Hot Tea
  • Iced Teas
  • Lemonade
  • Frozen Drinks
  • Smoothies

Cold and bottled beverages such as sodas, lemonades, and iced tea are available in two cup sizes: 17 ounces and 30 ounces.

For hot beverages such as tea and coffee, they have cups in small, regular, and large sizes. A small-sized coffee at Panera is 12 ounces, a regular-sized hot coffee is 16 ounces, and a large-sized coffee is 20 ounces.

Are Panera Soups Healthy?

Who can say no to a hearty and delicious bowl of warm soup, that too from Panera? Not us, for sure! When it comes to comfort food, Panera seems to hit all the right cords.

Their soups have become very popular over the years, but let’s be honest, not all of them are that healthy. This can be a serious turn-off for those watching their weight or simply trying to eat healthily.

Luckily, Panera has a few soup options that are perfect if you are looking for something healthy and filling at the same time. They include:

  • Black Bean Soup
  • Low-Fat Chicken Noodle Soup
  • Cream Of Chicken And Wild Rice Soup
  • Vegan Lentil Quinoa Broth Bowl
  • Soba Noodle Broth Bowl With Chicken

If you are watching your calorie intake, you can opt for a soup cup, which will have less soup as compared to a soup bowl.

Also, avoid getting the bread bowl which, although is super delicious, can add lots of unwanted calories to your meal.

If your soup has 300 calories and you have it in a bread bowl, that’s an additional 670 calories, totaling your calories to around 1000 calories for the meal!
