How To Make A Watermelon Keg

In order to make a watermelon keg, there are a few steps to follow. Making the keg is a bit like carving a pumpkin, only you’ll want to save all the insides of the watermelon to make delicious, fruity cocktails to serve out of the keg tap.

You’ll need to have a few tools on hand to help the process run smoothly:

  • A cutting board.
  • A long sharp knife to trim the bottom and cut the opening in the top.
  • A paring knife or coring tool to cut the hole for the spigot.
  • A large, long spoon or scoop to scrape out the inside of the watermelon.
  • A large bowl to store the watermelon flesh.
  • Some dish towels and rags for clean up.

Follow these steps to make your perfect watermelon keg to take your party to another level.

1. Cut a sliver from the bottom for stability.

  • First, you want to make sure that your keg is stable and sturdy. To do this, you will want to cut a small sliver from the bottom (don’t go too deep into the rind or it will leak) so that it will stand flat. Take your time to make sure it is flat and even for the best results.

2. Cut a circle out of the top of the watermelon.

  • This is where you want to harness your inner pumpkin carver. You want to find a sharp knife and cut a circle out of the top of the watermelon, on an angle like you would with a pumpkin. Cutting the circle on an angle is important to make sure the lid doesn’t fall inside the watermelon.

3. Scrape out the insides of the watermelon.

  • Using a large spoon or pumpkin scraper, you’ll want to scrape out most of the pink flesh inside of the watermelon. Place the scrapings in a bowl to use for your cocktail if you want to make a watermelon flavored treat.
  • Make sure you leave a small amount of the flesh around the outside edge of the watermelon so that the rind doesn’t make your cocktail bitter.

4. Cut a hole for the spigot.

  • Using the watermelon keg tap kit that you purchased (we reviewed and linked 3 of our favorites below), you will want to carve a hole into the bottom part of the watermelon.
  • Use the spigot to measure the hole so that it’s the right size to fit inside and can fit flush against the rind of the watermelon. This is important so that your watermelon keg doesn’t leak.

5. Screw the spigot into place.

  • Insert your spigot into the hole you carved in your watermelon and then screw it into place, making it as flush as possible against the rind.

6. Test the integrity of your seal.

  • Pour some water, juice, or other liquid into the watermelon so that it is just above the spigot. Open the tap to test that the liquid flows through and that there are no leaks.
  • If it leaks, pour out the liquid and tighten the back of the spigot more. Test it until there are no leaks.

7. Fill your watermelon and get partying!

  • You can now fill your watermelon with a fancy cocktail, vodka, rum, or whatever mixed drink or alcohol you want. Add some ice (a couple cups should do) and enjoy your party!
