Crepes traditionally are known as a breakfast dish but you could easily eat them as a snack or even a meal. You can make your crepes and fill them with whatever you prefer. You can even make them multiple ways. 

Can you freeze crepe batter if you don’t use it all? You can freeze any pre-made or excess crepe batter to use at a later time. It is a simple process and works well for preserving crepe batter. The batter will last up to 3 months and is easy to use after freezing.

  2. Place the crepe batter into a heavy-duty freezer bag. You can use an airtight container if you prefer but we’ve found it’s easier to work within a freezer bag when you remove it from the freezer. 
  3. Be sure to leave 1-2 inches of headspace at the top of the bag. 
  4. Label, date, and seal all packaging. 
  5. Freeze the crepe batter for up to 3 months for the best results, although it is possible to store it longer and not notice any negative effects from the process. 

As you can see, freezing crepe batter is not a complicated process.

It’s super simple and you simply want to make sure your storage method is airtight in order to ensure it does not dry out or gather bacteria from the outside air surrounding it. 

Now, let’s talk about some pros and cons of freezing your crepe batter. We share these not to scare you away from the process but rather to give you a clear picture of what you can expect from the process overall.

Pros to Freezing Crepe Batter

  • It is a great way to store and keep extra batter.
  • You can make a large batch and portion out some to be used at a later time.
  • The freezing process is very simple.
  • You can freeze at least 3 months and possibly longer… if you dare.
  • Using the batter after freezing is relatively easy.
  • The flavor and texture are not affected by the freezing process.

Cons to Freezing Crepe Batter

  • You will need to plan for thawing time when you’re ready to use it.
  • Freezing in heavy-duty freezer bags is recommended. If you use a dish, you may have issues with sticking.
  • The batter will not be as fresh-tasting or looking as fresh crepe batter.
  • Your freezer may end up full of made-ahead batter since it’s so easy.

Storage Information for Crepe Batter

If you want to make crepe batter ahead of time, you can store it in the fridge for a day or two.

This is a simple way to prepare meals or plans ahead and mix things up when you have time. On the flip side, you will want to make sure you use it in a timely manner. 

Here are the proper steps for storing crepe batter in the fridge:

  1. Put crepe batter into an airtight container or into a storage bag. If you use a storage bag, you can actually then use the storage bag to pour the crepe batter when you cook it. It’s a pretty useful trick! 
  2. Store in the fridge for under 24 hours for the best results. 
  3. If you can’t or won’t be using it within 24 hours, we recommend that you go ahead and freeze it. 

Refrigerating your cake batter is a good short-term option only.

When we mention the short-term, we truly mean it for this one. 24 hours is the maximum recommended storage time for the refrigerator just because the batter can start losing some of its appeal from there. 

Remember, the longer it sits, the worse it gets. However, freezing it preserves it in the state that it is in at the time of freezing.

For that reason, we recommend freezing right away if you have any concern at all that you may not use it within 24 hours. 

Using Crepe Batter After Freezing it

One of the best parts about being able to freeze crepe batter is that you can use it easily after it’s been frozen.

You will need to plan ahead at least a few hours as you will need to allow the batter to thaw before you try to cook with it. 

It is best if you know the day before and can let the batter thaw in the fridge overnight.

We recommend thawing it 12-24 hours in the fridge to give it plenty of time to thaw out for use. The time it takes to thaw out could depend on how cold your freezer is as well. 

Here are some steps for using your crepe batter after it has been frozen: 

  1. Remove your bag of crepe batter from the freezer. Leave it sealed and intact. 
  2. Put the freezer bag in some sort of container just in case it develops any leaks. 
  3. Let the crepe batter thaw in the fridge overnight at a minimum. Don’t leave it in the fridge for more than 1-2 days. 

From there, if you stored it in a freezer bag as we recommended, you can serve it to cook directly from the bag. 

We love this option as it saves on dirty dishes and reduces the mess.

To do this, simply make sure your bag is sealed. Push all the batter towards the seal, being careful not to break the seal. Snip off a corner of the freezer bag.

Use the bag like a tube, much like a frosting tube, and pour it directly onto your cooking surface.
