What Are Fortune Cookies?

Fortune cookies are crispy and sugary wafer cookies that are made from a few simple ingredients, such as flour, sugar, vanilla, and vegetable oil. The fortune cookies have a specific crescent shape, and inside the cookie is a fortune.

These fortunes are little prophecies or sayings printed onto a small piece of paper, which is placed into the fortune cookie after it is baked.

These small cookies are usually given to guests or customers at the end of a meal and are most commonly found in Chinese restaurants or takeaways.

Where Do Fortune Cookies Come From?

If you had to ask just about any person on the street where fortune cookies come from, they would probably turn around and say China. This is because fortune cookies are served in almost every Chinese restaurant or takeaway after a meal.

The truth however is that these small fortune cookies can be traced back to 19th-century Japan and 20th-century America.

Fortune cookies were brought over to America by Japanese immigrants in the early 1900s, and these small treats then began popping up in local bakeries in Los Angeles and San Francisco.

After some time, these were then adopted into Chinese cuisine and began being served as an after-dinner treat at many Chinese restaurants.

How Are Fortune Cookies Made?

Although they might not look it, fortune cookies are easy to make, and many people actually make fortune cookies at home in their kitchen.

There are also only a few ingredients needed to make fortune cookies, and you likely have most sitting in your pantry ready to use. The sugar is placed into a bowl, and then the other ingredients are added and mixed together until a smooth batter is formed. The batter is then laid in flat cookie shapes on a baking tray, and baked for a set amount of time.

Once baked, the cookies are carefully removed from the baking tray while they are still soft, the fortune is placed in the middle, and the cookie is folded into a crescent shape with either side pinched together to form a seal. The cookies can then be placed in a muffin tray to hold their shape as they cool and harden.
